Unmanned Trucks
Weave Way In

Washington '.U.P.) It's a little
eerie at first to watch those un
manned flat little trucks, loaded
with boxes, weave slowly
through a 28-acre room and
"know" where to go.
This goes. on every hour every
work day at a government ware
house at nearby Franconia, Va.
It is the largest of 12 operated
by General Services Adminis
tration throughout the country
to supply the needs of govern
ment departments and agencies.
It also is the largest warehouse
of its kind in the orld and sup
plies everything from sweeping
compound to sardines to govern
ment agenciss in the capital and
nearby areas.
A small portion of the 28-acre
building is walled off for office
space, but the best of the one
story structure is warehouse. By
comparison, the Pentagon, the
world's largest office building,
covers 34 acres.
On one side of the long build
ing, giant trailer trucks unload
their goods. A railroad siding
on the opposite side brings up
freight cars to unload.
As the crates and boxes are
unloaded they are placed on the
flat little trucks of the "tow
veyor" system for transportation
to the proper section.
Church Property
. The towveyor is a type of
monorail weaving through each
aisle of the great room which
is divided into seven numbered
sections.
A worker loads the truck and
then sets the section number
gauge on the truck. If it's num
ber seven, the truck takes off at
its standard 81 feet a minute and
continues to section seven where
it automatically rings a bell.
This is the signal for another
workman to unload. The bell
will not ring at any other sec
tion. A GSA official said the tow
veyor is laid so that there is no
storage space farther than 65
feet from the towveyor line.
As a mechanized warehouse,
the Franconia structure has 118
employees. Without mechaniza
tion it would require 149, a
spokesman sad. Other govern
ment warehouses also are
mechanized.
The government leases the
huge building, incidentally,
from the Park Avenue Metho
dist Church of New York. The
structure was built by a private
builder for government use and
then bought for about $5,000,
000 by the church as an investment.

Gets Term in Jail
Salem (U.R) Charles E.
Jones, 32, Oregon state peniten
tiary guard charged with taking
Benzadrine into the prison for
the inmates, was sentenced to
90 days in jail and fined $250
yesterday by Circuit Judge
George R. Duncan.
Jones was arrested last July
10. Judge Duncan ordered pro
bation for Jones upon payment
of the fine, after being told that
Jones had established himself in
the garage business since being
discharged from the prison.
