NEW STUDIES ON BRAIN
AND NERVOUS SYSTEM
A great day is dawning for re
search in diseases of the brain,
and this includes neuroses, psy
choses (ment a 1
jpsets), epilepsy
and mental re
tardation. New
technics have
been discovered
and are being
discov e r e d, at
last and a new
type of research
worker is ap
pearing in the
field. For years, psychiatrists
have been compelled, more or
less, 'to sit listening to the talk
of the mentally disturbed. Then
they have spun weird theories
about why the patients thought
as they did.
According to some of my older
and more old-fashioned psychi
atrist friends, little that was of
any use to insane patients came
out of such theorizing. Most of
it was sterile because it was just
a copy of the theorizing of Freud.
Certainly, I doubt if many psy
choanalysts would claim that
their theories have been of much
help to the people in mental hos
pitals. Some of Freud's theories
were so preposterous that even
his leading followers could not
swallow them, and hence were
excommunicated and cast out.
In recent years laboratory
trained neurologists and epilep
tologists have shown clearly that
in the cases of some brain dis
eases like epilepsy the early ana
lytic theories of causation were
silly. Today, we know that in
many cases convulsions are due
not to early sexual traumas but
to actual disease that can be
demonstrated in the brain. Some
times the diseased bit of brain is
localized with the help of the
electroencephalogram; it is then
cut out, and with this the patient
may be cured.
Insane Calming Down
Today it is a bit of a shock to
some of the spinners of theories
to see that, with the help of
chlorpromazine and reserpine,
thousands of the insane have
been calming down and eettine
so well that they have been dis
missed from mental hospitals and
sent home.- This suggests that the
Freudian ideas of sexual trauma
did not have much to do with
their mental upsets. If such ideas
had been important the patients
would have first had to get rid
of them through talking with
their doctors.
It is disturbing, also, to the
theorists to see volunteers being
thrown into a short spell of schiz
ophrenia, not by any childhood
sexual trauma but by a small
dose of lysergic acid. Neither is
it according to theory when a
badly depressed woman is sud
denly shaken out of her psy-
cnosis by a few electric shock
treatments, or when her mildly
depressed sister is greatly helped
each morning to get out of bed
and pull herself together and go

Experts in the new field of sci
entific and physiologic psychi
atry tell me that, so far as they
can see, much of the weird struc
ture of theory that was set up by
Freud is now coming tumbling
down. It is going to pieces under
the impact of the many new facts
which show that much of psy
chosis and epilepsy is not due to
silly thinking but to actual dis
ease in the brain, or perhaps in
the blood that is supplying the
brain. Put enough alcohol or
mescaline or hashish, or atropine
or morphine, or some barbitu
rate or lysergic acid or other
nerve-affecting drug into a man's
veins and, for a time, he will be
mentally deranged. Put into his
brain a tumor or some spiro
chetes of syphilis and again he
can be unbalanced.
New Promised Land
I recently received a wonder
ful new book, called "Neuro
chemistry: The Chemical Dy
namics of Brain and Nerve." It
was written by 32 scientists and
edited by Drs. K. A. C. Elliott,
Irvine H. Page, and J. H. Quastel
To me it is a sort of Baedeker,
showing the way into a new
promised land of at last a sci
entific psychiatry; one based on
chemical and physical and phys
iologic studies of how the brain
and the nerves work in health
and disease. Now, men are re
cording the blood flow through
the brain, they are studying the
chemistry of the brain, they are
studying the way it uses oxygen,
and what happens when it. does
not get enough oxygen; they are

A federal patent was granted
this week to Harvey J. Dutton,
2321 Capital ave., for a-Christ-mas
tree stand. Dutton said he
planned to market the stand in
the near future.
The device is composed of a
container with a screw in the
bottom, which holds the tree in
place. The container has three
clips on the outside to hold the
legs, which can be either glass
bottles or made of wood. Dut
ton said he had worked on the
stand for about three years

parts of the brain and that can
show us so much about what is
going on; some men are study
ing the marvelous effects that
many drugs have on. the brain,
and others are studying the
workings of healthy and dis
eased brains in all sorts of ani
mals. Finally, men are studying
the tremendous effects of hered
ity on the brain.
I was induced to write this
column when I noted that Dr.
Gilbert S. Gordan and his asso
ciates at the great Langley Por
ter Clinic, in San Francisco,
have just shown that in cases of
schizophrenics in which the per
son has been ill for four years
or more, the brain is using less
than the normal amount of oxy
gen, this can explain some of the
mental trouble of these persons.
Dr. Alvarez regrets he hasn't
the time in which to read or
answer requests for information.

Most American Cars Over Four Years Old
Chicago (U.R) If you are
driving a car that's at least four
years old, you have plenty of
company.
The Chicago Motor club said
registration figures show that 43
per cent of American cars are
from four to seven years old and
23 per cent are seven years or
older.
About 22 per cent of the autos
in the nation are two or three
years old. New models less than
one year old account for only
12 per cent of the total.
The club said the auto popu
lation of the United States has
almost doubled during the past
10 years and that the end of
1955 registrations- should total
more than 61,000,000 passenger
cars, trucks and buses.
