Rites Take Place
In Spokane Church

cember 27 in Spokane, Wash., of
Miss Josiine B. Johnson and
Gilbert G. Barbee Jr. The. five
o'clock afternoon ceremony was
read by the Rev. John J. Cole
man at Sacred Heart Catholic
church.
The bride Is a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Lamont ft. Johnson,
Spokane, and the bridegroom's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert G
Barbee, Central Point, formerly
f Medford.
Mr. Johnson escorted his
daughter to the altar. Her white
velveteen gown was floor length
and her fingertip veil was held
"by a crown of sequins and seed
pearls. She carried a white or
chid on a white prayer book.
Mrs. Don F. Runner, Seaside,
Calif., a sister of the bride, was
the honor attendant, and brides
matrons were Mrs. Joseph T.
White and Mrs. L. Richard King,
both of Spokane, and both soror
ity sisters of the bride.
Their gowns were waltz
lengtho dark green velveteen
which they wore with matching
headpieces. They carried dark
green velveteen muffs with holly
sprigs of velvet.
George D. Jorgenson, Bremer
- ton. Wash., a brother-in-law, was
best man. Mr. Runner and James
W. Clasby, Alameda, Calif., an
other brctfher-in-law, were ush
ers. The reception was held at the
Mamto Golf and Country club.
Mrs. Richard Matthews cut the
cake and Mrs. Herman Elixman
presided at the guest reeister.
Pouring coffee were Mrs. Nor
man L. Krey and Mrs. Hala
Johnson, grandmother of the
bride from Wichita, Kan. About
loO persons attended.
Decorations were in the holi
day theme.
The couple made a trirj to Sun
Valley where they were guests
at Ssun Valley lodge.
They are now living at 1530
South West Mill street, Portland.
The bride attended Washineton
State college and is a pre-school
teacher at St. Helen's hall, Port
land. The bridegroom, who is
employed at St. Helen's hall, is
a student -at Portland State col
lege. ' i

Woman's Society of Christian Service
To Observe 15 th Anniversary Tuesday
"Pages of Time" will be the theme for a program of Wo
man's Society of Christian Service. First Methodist church, to
observe the 15th anniversary of founding. The program will be
held Tuesday, January 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the church according
to Mrs. Floyd Levis, secretary of promotion, who is in charge of
the special program.

bers will be read by Mrs. Brad
fish, who was the first secretary
of the society when the Ladies'
Aid, the Foreign Missionary so
ciety and the Home Missionary
society joined together in Sep
tember, 1940, to form the Wom
an's Society of Christian Serv
ice. Mrs. Ben Schmidt, vice-president
of the society, will pay
tribute to the-15 oldest members
in the society and will recog
nize the 15 youngest members.
There are six past presidents
and all will be present to men
tion the highlights of her term
of office. The first president was
Mrs. W. W. Walker, followed,
in succession by Mrs. Harry
Meyers, Mrs. John Kent, Mrs.
J. Scott Heatherington, Mrs.
Jessie Minear and Mrs. Floyd
Lewis. A glimpse into the years
ahead of the organization will
be given by Mrs. L. B. Rankin,
president.
The Woman's Society of Chris
tian Service in Medford is one
unit in a world-wide organiza
tion and at present has a mem
bership of 255. The organization
began in the United States in
September, 1940, with 1,135,000
members and now numbers
1,800,000, with a program of
missionary work being carried
on in 67 countries besides the
United States.
The prayer group of the so
ciety will meet at 10:30 a.m. in

Masonic temple, Central Point.

session, a luncheon at 12:30 p.m.

be provided for pre-school chil
dren. All members and friends

new members" and to those inter
ested in knowing more of the
work of the Woman's society.
Proposed Hospital
To Be Explained
Mistletoe club women will
hear a talk regarding the pres
ent campaign for the proposed
Rogue Valley Memorial hospital
to be given by Irvin Patten dur
ing a meeting Wednesday, Jan
uary 25. The meeting will open
at 12:30 p.m., with a covered
dish luncheon and will be held
at the Girls Community club.
Mrs. Randolph Hugdahl will
give information on care and
preservation of new fabrics.

To Hold Meeting
At Nelson Home
Xi Mu, Exemplar chapter of
Beta Sigma Phi, will meet at the
home of Mrs. John S. Nelson,
Wednesday, January 25. A pro
gram will be given by Miss
Adabee Seiler, and Mrs. Steve
Saimons will assist the hostess.
Members are asked to bring
a "white elephant" article to
be used in a March of Dimes
auction. Plans will be completed,
also, for a rummage sale to be
held at the Ivy Street Market

Smorgasbord Date;
Officers Honored
Mrs. Ira D. Canfield, associate
matron, announced at a meeting
of Roxy Ann court, Order of
Amaranth, held Thursday, that
the sixth annual smorgasbord
will be held Sunday, January
29, at the Medford Masonic tem
ple. It is for members of all
Masonic bodies, their families
and friends, and - hours will be
12 noon to 4 p.m.
Chairmen include Mrs. Can
field, general chairman; Mrs. V.
A. Turpin, conductress, kitchen;
Mrs. Marshall Day, associate con
ductress; dining room; Mrs.
Frank Little, marshal, smorgas
bord, and Clarence A. Harwood,
associate patron, ticket sales.
Other members of the court will
assist with the ticket sales as
well as preparing and serving
the food.
"Inquiries as to the date of
the smorgasbord have been re
ceived from Portland, Roseburg,
Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, and
Yreka, and preparations are be
ing made to welcome our out-of-town
guests as well as our many
friends in the Rogue valley,"
Mrs. Canfield stated.

trons of Roxy Ann court were
honored at the meeting held
Thursday, January 19. A special
addendum and gifts were pre
sented by the royal matron and
patron, Mrs. George Rehart and
Carl H. W. Oestreich. Those hon
ored included Mrs. L. G. Frink,
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn L. Linn,
Ira D. Canfield, Mrs. Eltron Wal
dron, J. J. Kennedy, Mr. and
Mrs. Charles F. Hoppe, Frank
Lambo and Mr. and Mrs. George
Crawford. Mrs. James Miller,
past royal matron of Destiny
court, Tacoma, Wash., was also
honored.

cept for the initiatory work,
which was conducted by Mrs.
Rehart and Mr. Oestreich.

Rogue Rangers, young peo
ple's riding group, observed the
first anniversary of the organiza
tion at a meeting and election of
officers Monday evening at the
home of Mrs. F. K. Gibson, Bar
nett road. The group was organ
ized January 18, 1955 when
there were 13 charter members.
Active members now total 53.
Lynn May was elected presi
dent of the group Monday, and
Miss Peggy Clark, vice-president;
Miss Bonnie- Van Dyke,
secretary; Miss Janet Young,
corresponding secretary, and
Robert Steel, treasurer.
Mrs. Gibson was active in or
ganizing the group and is super
visor for the members.

In reviewing the past year's
activities it was brought out that
the Rangers won a first prize in
the 1955 annual Rogue . River
Roundup downtown parade; par
ticipated in competitive riding at
Grants Pass; appeared in the
Medford rodeo; conducted over
night and breakfast rides, a num
ber of social events- and dances,
and entertained parents of 'mem
bers. Spring and summer events
planned for this year include
drilling, breakfast and overnight
rides. .

Shady Cove-Trail Lions auxil
iary at a dinner meeting at the
Rainbow cafe Wednsday. The
group will operate a snack booth
at the Shady Cove gymnasium
during a basketball game plan
ned by the Lions club Saturday,
January 28.
Mrs. Delbert Spain, president,
conducted the meeting. Mrs. Lu
la Metts was a guest.
Plans were discussed for a
variety show in the spring, and
the club voted to join the Child
Guidance clinic.
The group discussed the pro
posal that all civic groups in
Shady Cove join together as a
whole to form' a community com
mittee to further civic projects.
Mrs. Harry Goode was appointed
to represent the club in this
movement.
Next business meeting will be
February 15 at Rainbow cafe.
