The Japanese hot bath is the
world's most torrid bath. Tokyo,

of the extremely hot bath in
Japan, it is interesting to note
that rheumatism is practically
unknown in that country.

Encouragement to
GOP Leaders Seen
Path to Defeat
Washington-(U.R) President
Eisenhower's invitation to Re
publican presidential hopefuls to
go into state primaries merely
invites them to be "clobbered"
by the President himself, a GOP
congressional leader said today.
In varying degree this com
ment reflected a widespread re
action to Mr. Eisenhower's state
ment Thursday that he will let
his name stay in the New Hamp
shire primary even though he
has not yet decided whether to
seek a second term.
While there were diverse in
terpretations of the news confer
ence statement, these general
conclusions were apparent:
1. Mr. Eisenhower encouraged
state GOP leaders, where they
have not already done so, to
enter him in more, if not all, of
the presidential primaries in the
18 states holding them.
Democrats See New Evidence
2. Most Democrats construct
ed Mr. Eisenhower's frank re
marks about the effect on his
health of his September heart
attack as fresh evidence that he
will not run again. Republicans
were divided on this question,
generally along the lines of their
prior beliefs.
3. The President clearly in
vited other GOP hopefuls, such
as Senate Republican Leader
William F. Knowland, to get into
the primaries if they wished,
but
"Everybody knows damn well
they would be clobbered if they
ran against Eisenhower," one
powerful Republican in Congress
said privately.
This Republican was talking
about the situation as it would
exist while Mr. Eisenhower's sec
ond term intentions were un
known, yet his name was enter
ed, in a number of primaries.
No Decision Yet
The President gave no indica
tion when he would announce
his second term intentions but
said he would do so as soon as
he has reached a firm decision.
Knowland wants to run if the
President does not. It was under
stood that, as of now, he is not
prepared to take any active steps
before mid-February to declare
himself a candidate unless there
is an earlier announcement from
Mr. Eisenhower.
But Knowland's friends said
this position did not necessarily
mean he would disavow the en
try of his nam in primaries
where a candidate's consent is
not required and he is not per
mitted to withdraw. Two such
places are Illinois, which has a
primary entry deadline next
Monday, and Alaska, where the
deadline is.Eeb. 1.
Mr. Eisenhower- already has
been entered in Illinois and there
has been talk of entering Know-land.

Hopefuls
Around Hollywood
Hollywood (U.R)' After
years in movies and a TV series,
a pint-sized brunette named Gale
Storm finally
became "hot"
all because
of a 10-inch
rhythm - and -blues.
The power
of spinning
wax is a cur-
iosity of show
business.
Aline Mosby Gale found
herself looking for new fields
to conquer after her television
show, "My Little Margie," fold
ed. She was known as the sweet
little Margie who in real life
was a family-type actress and
church leader. But Miss Storm
showed up on her first record
ing warbling a belt-'em-across
number, "I Hear You Knockin',"
and the disc jockeys sprang into
action.
Studio Offers Contract
"I thought people 'might be
startled by the song because it
wasn't my type," Gale smiled
today. "People get ideas in their
minds as to the way you are. I
was afraid they wouldn't accept
this record. When they did I
was amazed!"
Many fans had forgotten Gale
used to sing in "B" musicals,
"dreadful little movies" that she
shudders now to find on TV.
She quit pictures three and a
half years ago for new fame on
"My Little Margie." During
that period she sang only at Las
Vegas hotels.

Then she did two numbers
with Gordon MacRae on the de
funct "Colgate Variety Hour,"
and the president of Dot Records
got her on the phone.
Gale never will forget her
first appointment with the rec
ord company man. It was faked
as a means of sneaking her
into television's "This Is Your
Life." After that excitement died
down, she signed a contract with
Dot.
"They warned me my first
record wouldn't be a hit," she
said. "I'd never done a song
like that before. I was scared.
Idecided to approach the num
ber like playing a part. Then
I could let my hair down and
sing. Now I'm what is known
as 'hot,' I guess."

Jury Debates Faie
Of Burton Abbott
In Kidnap-Murder
Oakland, Calif. (U.R) A jury
of seven men and five women
debated today whether Burton
W. Abbott was the "sexual psy
chopath" guilty of murdering a
teen-age Berkeley schoolgirl.
The jury hearing the trial of
the 27-year-old accounting stu
dent received the case shortly
after noon yesterday. It was un
able to reach a verdict in five
hours and 23 minutes of deliber
ation and was locked up for the
night.
Body Near Cabin
Nobody expected the jury to
reach its verdict quickly. The
jurors had to consider the testi
mony of 106 witnesses and 299
exhibits presented during 48
trial days before deciding wheth
er . Abbott should lose his life,
be jailed, or set free.
Abbott was accused of kidnap
ing and murdering 14-year-old
Stephanie Bryan last April 28
Her purse and wallet were
found in the "basement of his
Alameda home on July 15. Her
body was found near his moun
tain cabin five days later.
As the jurors filed from the
courtroom to begin their delib
eration, the impassioned words
of District Attorney J. Frank
Coakley were still ringing in
their ears.
Four Verdicts Possible
He asked that Abbott be exe
cuted lest "he sink his fangs in
some other unsuspecting child."
"Are you going to set him
free to sing again his siren song
of sex?" Coakley asked.
The jury had a choice of
bringing in four verdicts on each
count of kidnap and murder:
The gas chamber, life imprison
ment without hope of parole,
lesser degree conviction, and acquittal.
