Drama Circle
Book Published
New York (U.R) An anthol
ogy containing the 16 Ameri
can plays so far designated as
seasonal "bests" by the New
York Drama- Critics' Circle has
just been published by Haw
thorne Books.
The work was edited by Jack
Gaver, United Press drama edi
tor and critic, and covers the
first 20 years of the Circle's
existence, 1935-55.
In a long introduction, Gaver
has written an informal history
of the Circle, revealing many in
teresting items involved in its
operations. While the critics nat
urally take their annual awards
seriously, they are not an organization-minded
group. Gaver
writes, and the Circle never gets
involved in social or cultural
activities, if it can help it. And
it usually can.
The book contains the full
texts of 15 plays and a lengthy
synopsis, with dialogue excerpts,
of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," the
.1954-55 winner which is still too
new for textual reproduction to
be permitted except in the offi
cial published version of this
Tennessee Williams play. In
four of the 20 seasons the Circle
has operated, it failed to agree
on winners.
As a preface to each of the 20
seasons, Gaver has written a
capsule summary of the activi
ties, telling how voting went on
each of the candidate plays and
other theatrical highlights.
. The texts included are: "Win
terset" and 'High Tor" by Max
well Anderson, "Of Mice and
Men" by John Steinbeck, "The
Time of Your Life" by William
Saroyan, "Watch on the Rhine"
by Lillian Hellmanj "The Pat
riots" by Sidney Kingsley, "The
Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee
Williams, "All My Sons" by
Arthur Miller, "A Streetcar
Named Desire" by Williams,
"Death of a Salesman" by Miller,
"Darkness at Noon" by Kingsley,
"The Member "of the Wedding"
by Carson McCullers, "I Am a
Camera" by John van Druten,
"Picnic" by William Inge and
"The Teahouse of the August
Moon" by John Patrick.
