Five men will enter the ring
in the final event and battle it
out until only one is left to col
lect the $200 purse. Each of the
five contestants will put up $35
and the promoter will chip in
the other $25.
The boys will get their regu
lar purses for the first two
matches. Contestants for the big
royal are Bull Montana, Thor
Hagen, Leapin' Larry Schene,
George Drake and Henry
(Golden Boy) Lenz
The top prelim which is down
for the best two out of three
falls or a 45-minute limit will
match Bull Montana and George
Drake. Montana clobbered Scot
ty Williams last week and the
fans are clamoring to see him
against either Poppenheim or
Savage. Montana needed police
protection to get to the dressing
room last week.
The first match also down for
the best 23 falls or 45 m. will
introduce Schene, Texas TV idol,
against the arrogant muscle
product, Lenz. Schene is rated
as just as good as Pepper Go
mez in Texas.
Syndicate Won't
Move Tigers if
Sale Is Final
Detroit CU.R) A member of a
six-man syndicate trying to buy
the Detroit Tigers promises his
group won't move the club to
another city.
Lionel Grise, from Holyoke,
Mass., says he doesn't expect the
Tigers to be sold until late in
the 1956 season. He says syndi
cate members will meet with
Tiger President Spike Briggs
next month in New York City to
discuss the sale.
Reports said the syndicate
offered $2,250,000 for the Tigers
Grise says the sale price prob
ably would be closer to
$3,000,000.

US Ski Team
To Cortina
Cortina, Italy (U.R) Al
though some officials were con
cerned about the condition of
the Olympic training slopes, the
United States ski team was ex
pected to leave Austria today for
on-the-spot drills for the winter
games.
Nelson Bennett, Sun Valley,
Ida., manager of the men's squad,
inspected Cortina's hills yester
day and was impressed by the
foot of snow in most ski trails.
This snow looks better than
any we've found in Austria," he
said. "I think I'll call in our
skiers ahead of time so they can
become accustomed to the lay
out "
The U. S. men's ski team
transferred its training sjte
from Kitzbuehl to St. Anton,
Austria, yesterday and originally
planned to remain there until
Friday. The women moved on to
Bad Gastien and will compete
in a giant slalom championship
there today.
When the Yank skiers arrive
at Cortina they will be joined by
another body of 40 athletes who
left New York by plane yester
day for the Olympic site. In
cluded in'the group are members
of the figure skating and ice
hockey teams.
Predict Russia in
Olympic Games

the Winter Olympics by a wide
margin. They figure the United
States will finish fourth in the
unofficial team standings.
The' winter games start Jan.
26 in Cortina, Italy. The United
Press polled 22 sports writers on
the scene and found they expect
Russia to take most of the hon
ors. They. figure second place a
toss-up between Austria and Fin
land. Then come the Americans.

Plans are now underway for
the second annual basketball
tussle between the Medford city
police and city firemen.
The fracas has been set for
Wednesday, January 25, at the
senior high gymnasium and
will be the first portion of a
March of Dimes benefit double
header. Hawkinson Tire Tread
of the Medford Independent
Basketball League, will skirm
ish Yellow Cab in the 'second
fuss.
Firemen won the game last
year and, while there's a spirit
of friendly and harmonious co
operation on the hoop court, the
policemen are reportedly intent
on evening the score on the
maplecourt. The enforcers of the
law are reportedly practicing
hard to get in trim for the
ruckus.
Capt. Dale Davis is in charge
of the firemen's team and of
game arrangements. Sgts. Theo
dore Whisler and Rollie Pean
are co-captains for the police.
Hawknson's has switched its
league trip to Butte Falls to
January 27 in order to take ad
vantage of the chance to meet
the Cabbies.

College of Idaho

College of Idaho's string of
23 straight Northwest Confer
ence basketball victories was at
an end today.
Pacific Badgers, the last team
to beat the Idaho club in confer
ence action, turned the trick in
Forest Grove last night by an 84
79 count in overtime. Pacific
had beaten C of I 91-70 in Febru
ary of 1954.
In the other conference game
last night Lewis and Clark drub
bed Whitman 83-67 as Hal Ad
rian put on a 29-point perform
ance for the Pioneers.
Ed Ramsdell sank two free
throws for Pacific to tie the
game at 69-all in regulation time.
Pacific went ahead 81-74 with
only 55 seconds left in the over
time, but College of Idaho
fought back to 81-79 with only
15 seconds left. But a lay-in by
Jerry Kalapus and. a free throw
by the same lad sewed up the
game.
Ramsdell led the scoring with
24 points while R. C. Owen and
Max Sanchez hit 19 each for C

years, Herman Taylor is pro
viding valuable service for the
Harlem Globetrotters, who
bring, their basketball magic to
Crater high school gym on
Thursday, Jan. 26, when they
top a gala program against the
bewhiskered House of David.
Starting time will be 7 o'clock
when the Yellow Cab faces
Medford YMCA in a preliminary
game.
Besides his dribbling finesse,
a show-stopping feat' in itself,
Taylor is a good, solid perform
er who can be depended upon
to function smoothly and effi
ciently. He's an inch over six feet tall
and comes from New York City
where he played basketball
three years for Commerce high
school and two years for Long
Island University.
Playing with teams like the
New York Renaissance and Har
lem Yankees around his native
city gained him the experience
that was to stand him in good

The $15,000 National Pro-Am
ateur Golf Tournament annually
sponsored by Bing' Crosby will
be held here again this year, it
was disclosed here today.
The tournament has been ten
tatively scheduled for Oct. 19-21.
It will follow the Seattle Open.
Oct. 4-7, and the $25,000 West
ern Open in San Francisco Oct.

ers, had been dropped from the
squad for breaking training rules
in La Grande last week end.
Foster was an all-state forward
at Central Catholic high in Port
land in 1952 and Bogle is a
transfer from San Mateo, Calif.,
Junior College.
Dr. Robert Livingston, head
coach at Oregon College of Ed
ucation, said two lettermen had
been suspended from the team
for Violating training rules. He
said Bob Janes, tall center, had
been dropped from the squad
and that Von Summers, a guard
had been suspended for a week

William Sidney .Goldin, 15, of

Ore., the National Rifle associa
tion announced.

way through 13 lower NRA
qualifications to achieve his
new high rating. With one more

top rating for the junior shoot

Baseball's ageless "boy won
der" isn't claiming a pennant.
But he is quietly, though hap
pily, contemplating the power-
packed in the big sticks carried
by his big six, led by the best
American league batter of them
all-Al Kaline.
"Get me a couple more bats
in there," Harris mused, "and
it would be interesting. Maybe
we could do it. You never can
tell."
