Roseburg Girl Is
Arrested For Bomb
Threats To School

county authorities said Saturday
they were considering a psychi
atric examination for a 17-year-old
girl arrested for making at
, least 15 bomb threats at Rose
Taurg Senior High school.
District Attorney Robert Stultz
said the girl, daughter of a prom
inent Roseburg family, was a
senior in high school, an honor
student and active in church
work. She Jiad never been in
trouble before but had no ex
planation for her actions.
Since Dec. 20, when the first
bomb threat emptied the school
of 1,300 students, there has been
at least one bomb threat each
ifAa either by telephone or by
messages addressed to Principal
y Harry Jacoby.
Arrest of the girl shocked
both police and school authori
ties. State Police Officer Joe
Haystead said it was one of the
most fantastic cases he had ever
"worked on.
During a closely-guarded in
vestigation, handwriting samples
from every student in the school
'were analyzed and it was such
an analysis that finally trapped
the girl. The last phone call
threatening to blow up the
school came . Thursday morning.
Haystead said the case had
no connection with the recent
theft of explosives by Roseburg-
teen-agers or the series of ex
plosions in Douglas county.
Stultz ' said the investigation
probably consumed more hours
than in any other criminal case
in recent Roseburg history.
Patterson Won't
Shirk Responsibility

Republicans he "would not
shirk" his responsibilities to
public office.
Gov. Patterson did not refer
to the United States Senate seat
" of Sen. Wayne D. Morse (D.
Ore.) which he has been urged
to seek. But he told an audience
of more than 100 that he and
Mrs. Patterson had been long
considering whether he should
leave the governor's office in
mid-term to meet other respon
sibilities. .

would be good
news for tax
payers if they
found it.
The gim
mick would be
an overly con
servative esti
mate of rev
enue which
Lyle C. Wilson might require
substantial revision within a
matter of months.
If the gimmick is there, Mr.
Eisenhower would be on the way
to outsmarting the Democrats
on a campaign year income tax
reduction which could make
votes for Republican candidates
nationwide.
The sharply edited Wall Street
Journal put it this way:
"The President will deliber
ately hold down revenue esti
mates. The reason: Tax strate
gists fear sizeable surpluses in
today's budget would set off tax
Sentence Hungarians
In Military Court
Vienna (U.R) A Hungarian
military court sentenced the
United Press and Associated
Press correspondents in Buda
pest to prison on charges of spy
ing and rebellion against" the
state, radio Budapest has re
ported. The broadcast said UP Corre
spondent Illona Nyilas was given
a three-year sentence and her
husband, AP Correspondent
Endre-Martin, a six-year term.
Both are Hungarian citizens.
Two members of the Ameri
can embassy in Budapest were
also found guilty and sentenced
by the military tribunal of the
garrison of Budapest, the radio
report said. They were identified
as Bela Kapotsy and Kernel
Balazs.
Kapotsy got life imprisonment
and Balazs eight years, the
broadcast s?id.
The announcement said "other
defendants" were also sentenced
to prison terms but -did not iden
tify them.

dollars for this fiscal year and
onlv sliehtly larger for fiscal
1957. Officials confide they may
jack up revenue and surplus
figures later in the spring."
Controlled Tax Reduction
Translated into presidential
year politics, it means:
The . Republican administra
tion intends to control the cam
paign year action of the Demo
cratic Congress on tax reduction
and to get the credit for Mr.
Eisenhower if a cut is made. It
wouldn't be fair to suggest that
the budget figures are falsified.
But they are very likely to
change substantially before they
are officially reviewed again
snmetime rjrior to June 30.
Budget estimates usually must
be revised from time to time.
Meantime, Mr. Eisenhower
will keep thumping his annual
message warning that a sound
financial policy forbids the Dem
ocratic congressional majorities
from moving at once to trim
taxes. Sometime before June it
is quite possible that the Presi
dent will discover happily that
revenue is running ahead of esti
mates, that the outlook for the
next fiscal year is rosier' by.
some billions of dollars.
Campaign Year Credit
Mr. Eisenhower, could then
send a message to Congress an
nouncing the good news and
calling for tax relief. Some Dem
ocrats are afraid of just that
and that Mr. Eisenhower would
get campaign year credit with
thevoters for easing their tax
load,
Mr. Eisenhower's State of the
Union message and today's de
tailed budget statement are ac
cepted here as the platform
upon which he will seek a sec
ond term if he runs. They
would become the platform of
any Republican presidential can
didate in 1956.
Peace on earth and good jobs
to men is substantially what
the President offers or, peace
and prosperity, for short. These
generalities are buttressed by
swelling spending programs in
the farm and human welfare
areas which were the foundation
of the New Deal Democratic
political organization created by
Franklin D. Roosevelt back
there in 1933-34-35.
Small wonder that some Dem
ocrats are complaining.
"Ike is stealing our stuff."
