Aids in Spotting Stamps
- "I never would have noticed
it," Jim said, waving an enve
lope, "if I hadn't got used to es
timating the number of perfora
tions on stamps."
It was an ordinary envelope
with two cancelled stamps on it.
They were one-cent Benjamin
Franklins, the type that started
coming out by the million back
in 1901, and which aren't worth
more than a couple of cents to
day. "But what do the perforations
have to do with the value of
these," I asked.
"Merely this. Pink," he said.
"You notice these two samps are
a pair. They are joined at the
narrow end, and there is no per
foration between them. The per
' forations are just along the ver
tical sides."

how many lamps his customer
had. When he found there were
six, he offered $15 for the lot, an
offer that was promptly accept
ed. So promptly, in fact, that I
began to wonder if the lamps
were not "hot," but they
weren't. They had just been in
the way for the past 20 years
;and now the owner was getting
rid of them.
J The lanterns were about 1900
-vintage, I guess. Maybe a decade
or so earlier, and some of them
still had the original wrappings.
'Just the same, they didn't look
like an item that would have
;much sale, especially in a store
that did a good business in flash
flights and batteries.
They had been made by a

It was of silver, rather heavy sil
"ver, too, " and its surface was
pricked through in a design that
extended over the entire outer
area of thg sphere.
"Give it a gentle twist and
it'll come a' part," Jack said.
I did so, and the. piece divided

From the upper one I noticed a
small eye extending, apparently
for it to be fastened to some
thing by a chain or cord.
Jack laughed when I asked
him what it was.
"It's a genuine pomander," he
said. "In other words, it's a very
good example of the deodorizers
our ancestors' used, or the near
est they could get to it.
Explaining that the word "po
mander" was a corruption of the
French for "pomme d'ambre,"
or apple of amber, Jack went
on to say that during the late

"Most stamps you see of this
type have fewer perforations
along the sides. They are the la
ter ones that came out in 1910
or 1914," Jim said.
"Because these two have 12
perforations to a given length
as against eight and a half
which they had latere I was rea
sonably sure these were samples
of the first coil stamps put out
by the government. And that is
what they are. The cancellations
date is Nov. 13, 1903, and the
first ones came out only a few
months earlier, on July 31 of the
same year.
"As for what they're worth,
unused, the value is $250. But
cancelled like these, and on a
cover, they are so rare that the
catalogues don't even list the
price."
TO COAL-OIL LANTERNS

metal of one of them, and he cer
tainly made them big enough.
They measured about 19 inches
high, 12 inches wide and better
than eight deep. Furthermore,
they had wire guards to protect
the flame area. A 10-inch reflec
tor of nickeled brass enabled
them to throw a beam of light
that must have looked like the
headlight of a locomotive.
They were interesting enough
a. relics of the close of the gas
light era, but I couldn't see
much value in them, let alone
any possibilities of a real profit.
Pete smiled at my comments.
"They'll sell mighty well long
about spring," he said, "when
the tourists start coming back
into the mountains again. And I
guess these'll bring about $25
each.
He did even better. When I
dropped into his store some, five
months later, he had only one
left. The price on it was $32.50.
BACK AS THE MIDDLE AGES
Middle Ages and even into the
late 16th century, our ancestors
used pomanders for carrying a
ball of perfumes and ambergris
about with them.
. "The pleasant, smell the po
mander gave off counteracted
somewhat the disagreeable
odors due to the wretched sani
tary conditions and general filth
of the times," he said. "In addi
tion, they believed that worn
around the neck, it would help
to prevent disease."
He had found the piece in a
shop in Paris where he bought
it for about $15 worth of francs.
"They are so rare today that
the proprietor didn't know what
it was. He just knew it was
made of silver.
"As for its value. So few are
ever offered 'for sale that it's
hard to put a value on it, but
've'been offered $300 for it, and
'frankly I wouldn't even consid
er twice that much." .

ation papers were prepared Fri
day for a new firm to provide
Portland with public transporta
tion. It would be known as the
Rose City Transit company. It
would trade its stock for- the
physical assets of the Portland
Traction company on city lines
only.
. Meanwhile the Portland city
council postponed for a week
consideration of an ordinance
that would extend the present
franchise of the Portland Trac
tion company so that a succes
sor firm could be organized.
The original proposal that the
franchise be extended for six
months was amended to - 11
months at a meeting Thursday
after it was learned PTC would
prefer that arrangement.
The council has objected to
granting a new franchise to PTC
because it is controlled by San
Francisco interests. Rose City
Transit company, however,
would Mill be a subsidiary of
PTC. i '

fected by the stock-equipment
trade with Rose City. '
Commend High School
Band On Behavior
I. A. Mirick, director of in
strumental music at Medford
High school, has received a let
ter from Hotel Drake Wiltshire
in San Francisco commending
the high school band for its good
conduct while staying there re
cently. '
Medford's band was one of
several which participated in
the annual. East-West ; Shrine
football game halftime ceremon
ies and pre-garhe activities. The
band also played during time
outs during the game.
John B. Quigley, general man
ager of the hotel, said '.'The con
duct of these young people was
beyond reproach in every way
. . . their conduct around theho
ter is definitely that of adult
guests used to traveling."
Quigley added that the hotel
hoped to "have the pleasure of
entertaining this young group
of people again in the future."

Blankenship, a World War n
veteran, has made his home
here since coming from Texas
six years ago. He and his wife
and three small children live in
the Henley district.. Until open
ing the garage here, he was em
ployed . at the . Ford garage in
Yreka for five .years.
Mr. and Mrs. Emory Parshall
of Henley rd. returns Tuesday
from Redding where Mrs. Par
shall had a medical check-up.
She is recovering satisfactorily
from her surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. 'Al Kutsky and
three small daughters are mov
ing from their present location
on old Highway 99 to the Mor
gan Gunst lodge which they
have purchased five miles up
the Klamath river. Kutsky, an
expert and experienced woods
man, is going into the business of
guiding and his services as a
guide will be available at all
seasons of the year for fishing,
trapping, and hunting expedi
tions in northern California
counties. He also will continue
His taxidermy business in which
he has been engaged for several
years.
The Hornbrook PTA held
their regular meeting Thursday,
Jan. 5, at the school house. In
the absence, of the president,
Mrs, Daniel Metzer, . the meet
ing was conducted' by . the vice
president, Mrs. Robert Farmer.
Hostesses for the evening were
Mrs. Jack Nelson, Mrs. Jack
Cross, assisted by ' Mrs., Robert
Crawford. Final plans were
discussed for the Founders' Day
program which will be present
ed at the- next meeting to be
held the evening of Feb. 2.

dist church met Thursday, Jan.
12, at the home of Mrs. Bertha
Bradley. The meeting was con
ducted by the president, Mrs.
Tom Watt, with devotionals led
by Mrs. Lawrence Breceda.
