Alleys Becoming

Chicago (U.R) The alley
is steadily becoming a thing of
the past in American cities.
Now, according to the Ameri
can Society of Planning Offic
ials, a number of subdivisions
of one and two-family houses
prohibit alleys. Most of the new
regulations barring alleys pro
vide for easements instead.
Some cities, says the society,
including Detroit, are encour
aging property owners in older
district to. eliminate alleys and
giving advice on how to go
about it.
The arguments against alleys
stress that they are expensive
and a nuisance to maintain. In
most places, the society contends
if they are kept up at all it is
not by the city but by property
owners.

CURE CANCER
As I said in a recent column,
the ultra-tiny viruses have a de-
ciri"H nreference for certain tis
sues in certain
animals. Like
a small boy at
table, they
may refuse ab
solutely to eat
certain foods
such as brains
or tripe or
liver; or, while
willing to. eat
beef, they may
balk at pork. Also I pointed out
that just as a mother can con
ceivably train her boy to eat
and even prefer brains and liver.
to other meats, so a laboratory
researcher may take a virus,
such as the one of polio, that
likes to eat out certan nerve
centers in a child's spinal cord,
and so change its appetite that
it will perhaps stay in the child's
bowel, leaving the nervous sys
tem untouched.
A while ago the research
workers in the great Sloan Ket
tering research laboratories in
New York City discovered a few
viruses that have a special fond
ness for living on cancer cells.
The logical thing to do then was
to train these viruses, through
many generations, to be- ever
more fussy and choosy about
eating cancer cells until they
would not care to eat also the
normal cells of a man. -
Now, I read that two such
viruses have been developed and
are being tried out on cancerous
men and women. Naturally, it
wi be some tira before the re-:.
suits of . such treatment are
known, but .the idea back of it
sounds like a good one.
In the last release of the Na
tional Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis, Dr. Hart E. Van Riper
stated that last year hospital
admission rates for polio in 8-year-olds
the best vaccinated
group had dropped 52 per cent.
The corresponding drop for 7-year-olds
was 4- per cent. For
young people aged 15 through
19 years, not vaccinated, the de
crease in admission rate de
creased by only 12 per cent.

Buffalo, N.Y. (U.R) A new
type of refueling hose has been
developed here that is proving
a boon to the country's' air
might.
The Buffalo plant of Hewitt
Robins Inc.,' helped on ihe pro
ject by the Air Force and the
Navy, is turning out hose that
makes possible the refueling of
military planes at faster speeds
and higher altitudes than here
tofore. '
The core of the hose is a syn
thetic rubber tube reinforced
with high-tensile steel. The cov
ering is of oil-resistant neoprene.
The new hose, according to
the company, "eliminates the
problems of bursting, crushing
and stretch formerly encounter
ed in the aerial transfer of gas
oline and jet fuel." '
