must learn to plan ahead for
holidays just as you did when
you had your family with you.
But, your planning now must be
of a different type.
Knowing you will be alone
unless you plan otherwise, you
should invite someone to cele
brate the holidays with you.
Don't you know some widows
and widowers who are alone just
as you are and who would enjoy
spending the day with you?
Then there are the members
of your daughter-in-law's fam
ily. It was thoughtless of them
not to include you in any family
party they had, but perhaps they
did not realize you would be all
alone.
In the future, why not invite
them several months ahead of

THE ABUSE OF DRUGS
It is sad that certain men and
women love to take too much
rrHiine or too many kinds of
medicine, o r
too large doses
of drugs that
can bring ad-
diction or
cause injury,
know persons
who are con
stantly taking
from 8 to 12
types of med
lcme every
day. They take perhaps a drug
to pep them up in the morning,
another to reduce weight, 2 or 3
to quiet the jitters; an assorted
group of vitamins, a mineral
supplement to the diet, one or
two antihistaminics for the snif
fles; some drops to make their
nose more comfortable, some
belladonna to quiet their tense
colon, a drug to soothe the lining
of their stomach, a drug to fight
heartburn, a drug to lower the
blood-pressure, and at night a
laxative, and a drug to produce
sieep.
Many persons get themselves
into serious trouble by continu
ing to take a dangerous drug
long after it has done its work.
Some will continue to take such
a drug without their physician's
permission. If he knew what
they were doing he would be
worried. Some patients get them
selves into serious trouble by
going to 3 or 4 physcians and
getting from each a prescription
for some drug which they ought
not to be taking at all. Many
go on taking a drug after it starts
to produce serious symptoms.
They do this because, when they
fall ill, it does not occur to them
that their symptoms are "due
purely to the drug.
Overdose of Food Supplement
Occasionally, I see a person
suffering from a chronic diar
rhea which no one can stop. In
such cases I ask if some drug
is being taken, and commonly
the man says, "No, none. But
later perhaps I find that he is
taking an overdose of some food
supplement; which he does not
think of as a drug. When he
stops this, his bowels are all
right again. ;
I remember a man who had
been getting sudden spells with
a big chill, then fever, violent ab
dominal cramps, and finally
diarrhea. ' Careful examinations
in several cities had failed to
show anything wrong. I asked
the man if he was taking any
drug and he said, "No." Then
I saw him in a spell and noted
that on his skin there had come
a few big brown splotches. When
I showed these to a skin special
ist he said immediately that they
were due to phenolphthalein, the
commonest drug that is put into
patented laxatives of all types.
Then the man admitted he had
been eating some laxative
cookies, but he had not thought
of them as medicine. When he
stopped taking the cookies, that
was the end of his spells. Evi
dently he had a rare and great
sensitiveness to phenolphthalein.
Another remarkable case was
that of a woman who had been
everywhere, trying to get relief
from pre-menstrual spells in
which she would get a chill and
a fever of 105 degrees Because,
some years before, she had been
to Central America, her physic
ians had tried hard to find some
parasite in her blood or' her
bowel. I put her into a hospital
the day before the expected
period, and when I saw her tem
perature shoot up, I got a hunch.
The spike on her fever chart
was so sharp that it looked like
a very high and narrow church
steeple. In other words, after a
quick rise, her temperature had
immediately fallen back to nor
mal. This suggested, not an in
fection but a violent reaction to
some drug. As I started asking
her what she had taken that
morning, an expert blood spe
cialist who had been looking at
the blood smears just taken from
the woman, called me and said,
"She has changes indicating a
reaction to a drug." She then ad
mitted that always on the first
day of menstruation she had
taken a medicine for cramps.
The drug she was using was one
that has been largely discarded
time to celebrate a major holi
day with you? If it is their cus
tom to 'spend the day with the
members of their family, they
might ask you to be with them
instead. Something can be done
to make the holidays less lonely
if you' will plan accordingly.

When I was a boy, the only
kind of mental hospital avail
able was called an asylum just
a place in which disturbed pa
tients could be locked up and
fed. Practically nothing was
ever done for them in the way
of treatment. Usually the sup-
erinxenaem was so busy with
administrative duties that he had
no time in which to talk to the
patients, and often he had had
but little training in psychiatry.
Today, psychiatrists and
others are searching for funds
with which to build more hos
pitals in which the idea is not
just one of custodial care of the
patients but treatment and re
search and study. When pos
sible, patients will be helped to
get well quickly, and to get
back to work. Along the way,
able young physicians with
newly-discovered technics will
try to find out why the patients
became mentally upset, or why
some patients got well quickly
and others did not.
Until a few years ago there
weren't any good modes of ap
proach to the problem; there
were too few ways of studying
the patients, especially with lab
oratory technics. Fortunately
today, many doors are opening
up. In this column I will keep
talkmg about mental diseases
because" today they constitute
the greatest t medical problem
facing the world. I want all
good and intelligent people to
be sympathetic to the idea of
doing something to solve it.

Family Differs in
Economy Answers

consumer study conducted by
the University of Illinois reveal
ed that members of the same
family often give different an
swers to questions about the
family economy.
In one-third of the 237 fam
ilies studied, members differed
in tfieir answers about family
income and whether the family
lived on a budget.
Only eight per cent of the
families in which two. members
answered questions were in full
agreement on what had been
bought for family use during
the six months preceding the
interviews.
To cap the survey, it was
found that lack of agreement
in reporting purchases of per
sonal items such as jewelry was
found in 80 per cent of the families.
