public hearings on the proposed
Klamath river compact.
Reed . said public hearings
would be held here May 1-2,
in Yreka May 8, in Weaverville
May 14 and in Eureka May 22.
Before the public hearings be
gin, comments and objections
from state and federal agencies
will beQard in Salem, Ore.,
April 10-11 and in Sacramento,
Calif., April 17-18.
Public hearings originally
were scheduled for later this
month, but were postponed be
cause of flood conditions in
northern California and south
ern Oregon.

Will Use A-Weapons

ities have agreed to boost the
Thai army strength to 80,000
fully equipped men, a high
Thai military official said today.
Lt. Gen. Kharb Kunjara, dep
uty chief of staff of the Thai Na
tional Defense council, said the
boost would bring Thailand's
present seven regimental com
bat teams to ten.
In an exclusive interview with
UnitedPress, Kunjara said Thai
land's present seven regimental
combat teams each have 8000
fully equipped men. Ip addition
there are 15,000 auxiliary troops.

movie-goers who like to exam
ine the dramatic situations of
a film more closely after watch
ing it, will find in the Medford
Public Library books to increase
their enjoyment of several cur
rent presentations on stage and
screen.
The library has just received
two additional copies of Alan
Paton's "Cry the Beloved Coun
try," ' which will be presented
by the Bishop's Company of
Hollywood at the Presbyterian
church on Thursday evening,
Jan. 12. This story has been pro
claimed "the most distinguished
novel that has come out of
South Africa in many years, one
of the most distinguished novels
that has appeared anywhere in
recent times."

which will be dramatized by the

Northwest .metals and minerals
production totaled $516,045,000
in 1955, the regional office of
the U. S. Bureau of Mines re
ported today.
The region's output in 1954
totaled only 5454,825,058, the
report said. Exclusive of alum
inum, which is made from im
ported materials, the total was
$320,745,000 in 1955 compared
to $279,487,000 in 1954.

Fulton Lewis Faces
Libel Suit Threat
Richland (U.R) Mrs. Pearl
Wanamaker said today she had
"no comment" on an apology
made to her by Fulton Lewis Jr.,
who erred in" a Friday night
broadcast and linked her with
Communism.
"I'll have no comment on this
matter until I return to my
Olympia office Thursday when
I plan to hear a transcription of
Lewis' Monday broadcast,", she
said.
The white-haired director of
Washington's public school pro
gram threatened Lewis with a
libel suit after he linked her
with Communism in his broad
cast last Friday night.
Last night, the news commen
tator apologized for making an
error concerning Mrs: Wana
maker. He offered her 15 min
utes of 'network airtime to help
correct his error.
Lewis telegraphed Mrs. Wana
maker during the week-end that
he was "horrified" to discover
he had mistakenly said things
about her.
Dulles Will Visit
New Delhi in March
New Delhi (U.R) Secretary
of State John Foster Dulles will
visit New Delhi , in March for
personal talks with Prime Minis
ter Jawharlal Nehru, informed
sources said today.
The sources said Dulles wants
to meet Nehru and discuss many
questions of importance, but fur
ther details were not known.
Dulles recently was heavily
criticized in the Indian press for
allegedly supporting Portuguese
colonialism on the Indian sub
continent. The criticism stemmed from
a joint statement issued by
Dulles and Portuguese Foreign
Minister Dr. Paulo Cunha in
Washington referring to. the
Portuguese possession of Goa as
a "province."
Indian newspapers filled their
editorial columns for days with
attacks on Dulles and said his
use of the term "province" back
ed Portuguese claims to Goa.
5P Hauls Children
To Reedsporf School
Reedsport (U.R) The South
ern Pacific's "schoolhouse" spe
cial swung into operation yester
day carrying 131 school children
past a slide-blocked section of
highway 38.
The youngsters, usually trans
ported to school from their scat
tered homes by bus, were happy
over what was their first train
ride for many of them.
The train picks up the young
sters about a mile south of High
way 38 where they are brought
by school bus. The slide area is
on the highway about a mile east
of Reedsport.
SP officials said the service
to school would be continued
with an engine and two steam
heated coaches until the half
mile of muck could be cleared
from the blocked highway.
Meanwhile, loggers of the
Long-Bell and E. K. Wood com
pany plants here were getting
to work via emergency ferries.
Peiping Said Worried
By Soviet Influence
London (U.R) Diplomatic re
ports from Peiping said today
Communist China is worried that
Russia may usurp Chinese influ
ence in Asia and that Soviet of
fers of aid may turn out . to be
at China's expense.
The reports said Peiping's sus
picions were aroused by the
Asian visit of Premier Nikolai
Bulganin and Communist party
chief Nikita Khruschev since
their' was an out and out move
to extend Soviet influence.
Behind the fear of extended
Soviet influence is the double
fear that any aid given to other
Asian nations may be at the ex
pense of the Chinese Communist
regime. Peiping was reported
very concerned about such diplomacy.
