Mother, Daughter
In Cool Reunion
Irrigon,. Ore. U.R) ' Mrs.
Amelia Lawson staged a half
happy, half heartbroken reunion
yesterday with the young wom
an she says is the daughter she
left 26 years "ago.
But the daughter, Mrs. Russell
Pohl, Spokane, said after the
two hour meeting she was still
"confused" about whether Mrs
Lawson is the mother from
whom she was parted as an in
fant and does not remember.
Reporter Patrick Owens of
the Columbia Basin News intro
duced the two at the home of
Mrs. Lawson and her husband.
Ralph.
The two women regarded each
other for a moment, then Mrs.
Lawson rushed forward with
outstretched arms. "Hello,
Olive," she said. B
' "How do you do," said Mrs.
Pohl.
The stage for the reunion was
set after Mrs. Pohl received a
letter New Year's eve from Mrs.
Lawson in which she said she
was Mrs. Pohl's "very own
mother." She said she had locat
ed Mrs. Pohl through Sheriff
Floyd Huggins at Independence,
Kan.

Monk Runs Amuck
In New Orleans Shop
New Orleans U.R) The
bull in the china shop has
nothing on the ring-tailed
monkey in the pet shop. The
monkey escaped from his cage
in a New Orleans pet shop on
Sunday and for two hours,
he ran riot, opening all the
parakeet and canary cages
and breaking into feed sup
plies. When the owner arriv
ed, the monkey was mixing
dog and bird food with dog
shampoo and smashing pigeon
eggs. Says the owner, "I'd
like to wring that ring-tail's
neck."
State Taxpayers
Face Tough Year
Salem '(U.R) The State Tax
commission warned Oregon tax
payers today they face the
toughest state income tax pay
ments in history this year.
A surtax of 45 per cent was
added to state income tax bills
this year by an income tax
amendment passed during the
1955 legislative session.
Two per cent state withhold
ing deductions are now being
made in pay checks, instead of
one per cent, to enable employed
persons to make the high tax
payments.
The legislature also reduced
the income tax exemptions on
dependents $100 so that the
average taxpayer will be pay
ing between 50 and 60 per cent
more state tax in 1956, accord
ing to Commissioner Ray Smith.
The state treasury expects to
rake in between $45,000,000
and $50,000,000 from the adi
tional taxes. That, with other
taxes, should be enough to bal
ance the state budget. ;
Only bright spot in the tax
payers' picture was that, in 1957,
the taxpayer may be able to re
cover some of the additional
money by using the state tax as
a deduction on his federal in
come tax return.
Virginia Voting on
Private. School System
Richmond, Va. U.R) Vir
ginia voters go to the polls today
to decide whether they want a
state - supported private school
system to evade the issue of racially-integrated
public schools.
Officials estimate that some
620,000 persons are eligible to
vote in the referendum on a pro
posed constitutional amendment.
Most state leaders are behind
the proposal.

charges against him. The board
held a public hearing on the
case Dec. 30.
The pension was suspended
last month but quickly restored,
pending the hearing board's de

of the party. It said the party
undermined public interest and
cooperation in the war effort.
Kutcher testified at the hear
