Buried Treasure I
Hunting Permit Stamps
Found Good Investment
The sky on the horizon look
ed like an angry wound and the
first flights of ducks were al
ready whistling across the
marshes under a low cloud
cover.
Ted let one V pass over us
but when another came in, he
dropped the lead bird and two
others while I had equal luck.
From then on they came so
thick and fast that within 10
minutes we had our limits, and
the hunt was through.
"Just the same, I don't regret
the 'good oIB days' at all," Ted
said. "We sfaughtered the game,
then, and now, thanks chiefly
to measures such as the hunting
permit stamps, we are doing
3 something significant about
bringing wildlife back."
I agreed with him, and know
1914D PENNY IS A COIN WORTH OWNING
Jim's mother, L y d i a said
everyone was young and foolish
at one time or another.
"Here's an example of what
I mean," said Jim, as he picked
up a small cardboard box and
opened it. "I found0 this just
the other day and look what
it contains."
With a quick motion he re
moved the lid and a layer of
cotton batting to reveal two tiny
teeth and a copper cent.
"They're Tiis first baby teeth,
all right," Lydia said, looking
down at them. "I saved them
and the penny, too, because the
little monster was teething, and
we saw him pop the penny in
his mouth and I had to shake
it out of him."
I picked up the coin. It was
a 1914 issue with a Denver mint
AUTHOR'S SIGNATURE UPS
One of the oddest and pleas-
antest sensations I know of is
" the one that comes when, look
ing through stacks of books for
one volume, I come across some
thing really rare. It is a sensa
tion that, no matter how often
repeated, will never become less
acute.
On the latest occasion, I was
looking for a copy of Werfel's
"Star of the Unborn" when sud
denly I found myself looking at
a faded copy of William Mc
Fee's "Letters From an Ocean
Tramp."
The book was signed William
McFee on the fly leaf, though in
pencil. And otherwise it looked
as if it might be a copy of the
first edition. If so, I knew it
would have something of a pre
mium since the book was the
first one of this notecl author's
to be published. The price ask
ed was 50 cents, a sum I decided
to gamble without further inves
tigation which would be certain
to attract too much attention
if my suspicions were correct.
It was a first, all right, as I
discovered a little later in check

ing that he had been a hunter
for years, I asked if he had
bothered to save any of his per
mit stamps.
"Certainly I have," he re
plied. "As a matter of fact, I've
always bought two. Back in 1934
I bought one for a fellow who
didn't show up, so I kept his,
and that got me started. Each
year since I've added another
pair, both unused and the one
you have to sign and carry with
you in the field."
Aside from gratifying Ted's
interest in conservation, the pur
chase of the stamps is good, as
an investment.
Cost of the extra set from
1934 to 1954 was only $21. As of
today their catalogue value
stands at S107.50. Current value
of the same stamps, used, is
$42.20.
mark just below the date. The
condition of the coin was vir
tually uncirculated except for
one tiny mark that might have
been made by baby teeth. The
color of the coin a most im
portant point in judging value
of copper cents was almost a
bright red, like that which they
have on first coming from the
mint.
I started to say something
about the value of the piece,
but Lydia beat me to it.
"I've already looked it up, Mr.
Gage, and know its worth from
$45 to $65 depending on what
catalogue you use . . . And that's
another reason why I expect him
to drive me downtown. Since I
saved such a valuable coin for
him, the least he could do is pay
my beautician today."
VALUE OF FIRST EDITION
ing the date and place of pub
lication London, 1908. But the
signature bothered me. When
the book was published, the au
thor was at sea. In fact, the first
copy he saw was in a Boston
bookstore, and McFee didn't buy
one since he knew he would
have some complimentaries
when he got home. Under the
circumstances, it was a cinch
that my-copy was not the result
of an autographing party.
It was nearly two weeks be
fore I located a sample of the
author's signature that I knew
was authentic, and fortunately
a comparison showed that mine
was valid, even though done in
pencil, and an indelible one at
that.
But even without the signa
ture the book would have form
ed a worth-while find. Despite
its faded cover, its condition was
sound enough to make it worth
about $30. The autograph, how
ever, doubled its value, making
it easy for me to get $50 for it
without difficulty from a col
lector. (Released by
