Unfortunately for mankind
there are a few dozen miserable
diseases of the nervous system

show up in
some of the

carry the par
ticular "gene"
that produces
the defect. One
oi uie worst of these diseases
is called Huntington's chorea.
Studies of the inheritance of this
disease have now been carried
through as many as 12 genera
tions of a large family. They
show that 2 out of 4 children
of affected persons will get the
disease. It may show up in mid
dle life, and then, in the next
16 years or so it will slowly
destroy the poor patient's nerv
ous system.
Since in this country there are
some 25,000 persons who each
year come down with the dis
ease, the problems of just find
ing nursing and hospital care
for them is an enormous one.
The cost to- the nation runs
into several hundred millions of
dollars. Since the disease can
so easily be prevented by warn
ing the affected persons of what
can happen to children born to
them, it is remarkable that so
far the government has done
nothing to tell these people of
the terrible dangers they face.
The disease is likely to begin
with, either a St. Vitus dance
type of erratic muscular action

ble. There are special tests which
often will tell whether a young
person is likely later to get the
disease. The person then, if he
(or she) wishes, can avoid the
raising of a large family.
The investigators found that
most of the patients had been
to many physicians, none of
whom had made the correct diag
nosis (or if they had made it,
had not had the courage or the
devotion to tell the truth to the
victim). Unfortunately, most of
us physicians think that it is
kind to leave the patient with
a serious disease with some hope.
This allows him and his family
to go on for years wasting large
sums of money on useless and
repeated examinations. We doc
tors are influenced somewhat
by our conviction that no matter
how positively we might say that
the disease is incurable and not
treatable, most patients and their
family will go on wasting their
money on futile journeyings
from one big clinic to another.
We doctors behave in this way
when a sad mother brings us
a child who, at the first glance,
we know to be a hopeless idiot.
We think it kind to tell the wom
an to keep up hope of a cure,
but actually, are we kind when
we do this? I hate to see such
a woman encouraged to go on
spending all of her husband's
money and perhaps all of her
parents' money on a futile search
for help. This is particularly sad
when the woman has other chil
dren who are bright and gifted,
and could so well use on their
education the thousands of dol
lars that are going to be wasted
on the badly retarded child.
Patients Grateful (
The Mayo investigators of
Huntington's chorea were glad
to learn that 97 per cent of the
persons sought out and found
were grateful for the informa
tion about their illness or pos
sible illness; only 3 per cent felt
they would prefer not to know
the facts or to face them.

curable. One day, as I walked
along the street I saw fire burst
out of a manhole. I learned later
that this fire had thrown out
of function all telephone and
power lines supplying a certain
district in the city. Next day, as
saw electricians going down
the manhole to pull out the
burnt wires and to replace them
with new ones, I thought how
wonderful it would be if often
we physicians could go down
a sort of manhole into the brain
to string a few thousand new
nerves and to put in a lot of
new nerve centers. Because we
cannot do this we cannot cure
these unhappy patients. If only
hundreds of thousands of un
happy persons could understand
this, they would not spend all
their money on doctors and
quacks. They would see so clear
ly why nothing can be done for
them with any medicine or any
mode of treatment. In many cases
they could understand the hope
lessness of things if only they
knew how to look down a micro
scope and see that nerve centers
were gone, and replaced by scar
tissue. I hate to be so discourag
ing, but I cannot bring myself
to promise to do what I know
cannot be done.
