We Physicians Should Be
More Friendly With Patients
Much of the happiness that
has come to me in my 50 years
of thp nractice of medicine has
come because
of warm
friendships it
brought me.
T li a n - n o
X il shares anxie
ties with a fel
low human
being, one
tends to come
very close
emotionally to
tnat person and his family. Ev
ery Christmas I get scores of let
ters from old patients, a few of
them from my San Francisco
days, 30 years and more ago.
Oftentimes, as I read one of
these kindly letters, my mind
flashes back, perhaps to a night
when I sat beside a bed, hoping,
hoping I could find some treat
ment that would stop an import
ant life from ebbing away.
Often it is so' easy to make a
dear friend of a patient that I
feel sorry that so many of my
medical and surgical brethren
miss this joy. It doesn't take
much time to stop and say a
kind or a cheering word, or to
respond to a person's feelers
toward a better acquaintance
and some friendship. Some of
my surgical friends say to me
with annoyance: "My patients
pay me for an operation; not for
chatting with them." But I am
sure that the stand they take
not only robs them of a much
richer life it accounts for much
of the bad feeling that has come
up between us physicians and
the public.
Wasn't Grateful
I remember reading in the au
tobiography of a famous sur
geon, that when wounded in
France in World War I, he was
so skilfully treated by an army
doctor that, he felt that for the
rest of his days, he ought to be
grateful to the fellow, but he
wasn't. He always remembered
that doctor with ' great dislike.
Why? Because -the doctor left
him with the feeling that was an
inanimate object whose pain,
anxiety, great homesickness,
and fear of future disablement
or death were of no interest
whatsoever. A few words of
kindness and encouragement

would have changed all that.
The Army doctor might have
spent an extra 30 seconds grip
ping the injured man to him as
a devoted friend, but he would
not or perhaps could not do it.
Many a-time I have heard a
patient say, "I know I owe my
life to my surgeon but to the
end of my days I will dislike
him because, one night when in
the great loneliness of my hos
pital room, I reached out for a
little human friendliness, he
brushed me off discourteously
and stalked out. He would not
stop long enough even to tell
me what, at the operation, he
had found and done, and what
were my chances of being well
again.",

Without Painful Backache
Nagging backache, headache, or muscular
aches and pains may come on with over-exertion,
emotional upsets or day to day stress and
strain. And folks who eat and drink unwisely
sometimes suffer mild bladder irritation
.with that restless, uncomfortable feeling.
If you are miserable and worn out because
of these discomforts, Doan's Fills often help
by their pain relieving action, by their sooth
ing effect to ease bladder irritation, and by
their mild diuretic action through the kidneys
tending to increase the output of the IS
miles of kidney tubes.
So if nagging backache makes you feel
dragged-out, miserable, with restless, sleep
less nights, don't wait, try Dean's Pills, get the
same happy relief millions have enjoyed for
over 60 years. Ask for new, large, economy
size and save money. Get Doan's Fills today I
