By ROBERT MUSEL
United Press Correspondent
London (U.R) There's a
gloomy word beginning to crop
up in gossip in royal circles
about Princess " Margaret and
word is:. "Spinster,"
If the nation could have
made a unanimous New Year's
wish it probably would have
been that the 25-year-old sister
of Queen Elizabeth might find
a mate and marital happiness in
1956.
But 50 million Britons prob
ably will be disappointed. For
many of the members and grad
uates of what used to be called
"the Princess Margaret set" are
beginning to believe the pretty
little princess may never marrV
at all. And this school of thought
includes quite a few knowledge
able courtiers as well.
Shed no tears over the break
up wth Group Capt. Peter
Townsend. The princess never
intended to marry him. Her
final dramatic statement of re
nunciation was exactly what
her friends expected from a girl
who would have been an actress
if she hadn't been royally born.
No Townsend Ghost
No, it won't be the ghost of
the Townsend epsode that will
keep the princess ' single if
she does remain single.
It will be simply that, she ex
pects a great deal from her
dream man and dream men are
in very short supply these days.
Especially those who
good looking, rich, love dancing
and the theater and will feel
right at home with her family.
Not everyone can feel cozy
with in-laws when those in-laws
include queens, princesses and
princes and the setting is a
palace or a castle.
Also the princess insists on
marrying for love. Ladies as
highborn as she is never have
much of a choice' of mates.
When they make true love a con
dition, that narrows the field to
the vanishing point. So the
princess has grown older alone
while the men she should have
married are busy raising fami
lies. . ... .
Few Remain
There are only four or five
youngish men tleft in Britain
who qualify as ' top "eligibles"
and no sign the princess is taken
with any of them. But she may
yet find the man she is seek
ing elsewhere. The common
wealth, perhaps. , x
So 1956 will see the princess
making more frequent overseas
trips, maybe even to the United
States.
When I mentioned the talk
about spinsterhood to a royal
source, he said: "Life for a royal
spinster isn't as bleak as it might
be for other people, you know.
Princess Victoria, sister of
George V, had a very full and
happy life. There is always work
of importance for them to do."
But it seems a chilly trade for
a husband and love and chil-
