FINGERPRINTED Minnie
C Mangum, 52, a building
and loan association officer,
appears in a meditative mood
after being fingerprinted at
police station in Norfolk, Va.
She has been charged with
embezzling $800,000 in the
last fiv years. Miss Mangum,
a "generous and kindly" Sun
day school teacher, was ar

of-the Commonwealth Build
ing and Loan Association.
Device on Plane
Declared To Be
Soldering Healer
Pittsburgh U.R) A small
device found , aboard a TWA
airliner, which touched off a
full-scale sabotage investigation
and puzzled some of the nation's
leading explosives experts, to
dayturned out to be a harmless
soldering iron heater.
The Civil Aeronautics Auth
ority, a special Army ordnance
unit and the FBI tested and re
tested the "minute missile" for
hours, but could not identify it.
The mystery finally was solv
ed by Robert Woods, a TWA
radio maintenance man here
whasaw a picture; of the mech
anism in a Pittsburgh newspaper-
r-
Woods ended the frenzied in
vestigation by telling the experts
the "mysterious" apparatus was
merely a self-contained heater
for a soldering iron.
"There probably would have
been no danger if it had been
detonated in some way," Louis
Reinbold, a CAA official said.
"It may have been in the plane
for a long time after Emergency
radio repairs were made."
Reinbold and his assistants
took th same precautions "as
if the mechanism were a time
bomb."
The object was discovered by
Capt. Lyle Ryan after his plane
carrying 32 passengers had left
Columbus, Ohio, on a Chicago
to Washington, D.C. flight Tues
day. The cylindrical mechanism",
about 2V inches long and about
of an inch in diameter, was
removed at Ohio County Airport
at Wheeling, W. Va., and Army
bomb disposal experts were call
ed to investigate.
