Preps To Start
Fourteen high school basket
ball teams in this section of
southern Oregon buckle down
this week to the business of
fighting for conference and dis
trict championships and state
tournament berths.
Games that count toward titu
lar trophies are scheduled in
three circuits of the area on Fri
day and Saturday. Circuits are
the Southern Oregon Conference
of A-l schools, the Rogue
League of A-2 rivals and the
Jackson County B League.
Medford is defending champ
in the SOC, Crater in the Rogue
and Talent in the B loop. Klam
ath Falls with a big advantage
in height goes into the A-l race
as favorite but Medford figures
as a strong contender and both
Grants Pass and Ashland have
indicated that they can't be
counted out.
Phoenix with a veteran club
looms as team tobeat in the A-2
circuit. The Rogue race depends
much on how well inexperienced
teams of Crater, Eagle Point and
Illinois Valley come along. St.
Mary's and Rogue River appear
again as the strongest contend
ers to dethrone Talent but Pros
pect seems much tougher than
last year and could make a good
bid.
FOUR WINNERS

Russian runner who formerly
held the world record for 5,000
meters, is running 30 kilometers
daily while training for a bid
to better the international 5,000
meter standard of 13:40.6 set
last October by Hungary's San
dor Iharos.

Psychologist Tes How
To Overcome Buck Fever
Pittsburgh (U.R) The best
way to overcome buck fever and
stage fright is to accept the idea
that you are going to make mis
takes, according to a University
of Pittsburgh psychologist.
Dr. Robert Patton, head of the
Pitt psychology department, lik
ens stage fright to the sensations
soldiers experience before going
into battle.
"It is a form of shock," Pat
ton said, "which people under
go when they are faced with the
necessity for action and the pos
sibility of failure."
Two-Year-OcJ Listed As
Driver In Auto Accident
East Providence, R. I. (U.R)
A baby was at the wheel of one
of, two automobiles involved in
a collision.
It seems that Thomas Carney's
t-"o-year-old son had taken his
dad's car keys from the kitchen
table. The tot toddled out to the
car, turned on the ignition and
stepped on the starter, just as
he'd seen his father do.
The car, left in reverse gear,
backed out of the driveway and
into a parked car.
The baby was unhurt.
