Marriage to a girl whose
health is poor can be a serious
burden for a young man to as
sume. (Q) "My son, who is 21 .
years old and in the Army, has

girl who has
diabetes. The
doctor told
my son they
would have to
get married

about her condition and then

a great responsibility to marry

just to spite us. .
"My husband has a heart
condition and- had a slight
heart attack after he heard
this. We are very upset about
the whole matter, as he is our
only son, and we feel" the girl
is trying her best to take him

wounds or hurt pride it has
caused.

mother will appreciate that you
are concerned about her health
and that you want to do all you
can to help5 the young people
face a situation which may cause
great financial strain on your

of the training
of surg eons,
"There are
many reasons
why we "must
look more care
fully at the
canaiaates we select for training,
the program we offer them, and
the leadership we show them.
"There are many reasons why,
in addition to training men who
will advance the borders of sur
gical effort, we should . . . en
deavor to train men who have a
deep appreciation of man as a
man. Many of the evil practices
that have befallen us are due to
the fact that we have not fully
taken these matters into ac
count." Those who were listening to
him heartily approved of this
statement, because they knew
that a surgeon needs a greater
sense of honesty and dedication,
and a greater spirit of disinter
estedness in his behavior than
does any other man in the world.
Why? Because an unwise or un
needed operation, particularly
on a woman's pelvic organs, can
ruin a life. To charge a woman
$500 for an unwise operation is
a minor offense compared with
the terrible offense of perhaps
throwing her into a severe meno
pausal depression; - taking away
her sexual interest, and thereby
wrecking her marriage.
Just before I wrote this I saw
a lovely woman who consulted
me some 20 years ago, when she
was 25. Two years before that, a
surgeon had performed a hyster
ectomy, apparently because the
woman had a small fibroid tu
mor. Today, I doubt if many sur
geons could be found who would
perform such an operation on
such a young woman. They now
know that the danger of the
fibroid's turning into cancer is
so small as not to be worth wor
rying about. In 1935, when I
first saw this woman, she was a
bunch of nerves, she was de
pressed, and she was terribly un
happy because she was one of
those unfortunate women who,
after this type of operation, lose

infected with rabies.
The American Veterinary
Medical Association offered this
advice to hunters, farmers or
just strollers-in-the-woods. It
said that rabies among wild ani
mals is more prevalent than sci
entists used to think.
"Normal, healthy wild ani
mals are usually shy and always
try to avoid humans," the
AVMA said. "But rabid animals
are aggressive, and this trait
of tea takes the form of apparent
friendliness."

squirrels; skunks, and otheF'den

Piatt and Irving H. Steinberg,
writing in the Annals of Inter
nal Medicine, hexamethonium
chloride, which has been used in
the treatment of severe forms
of high blood pressure, will re
lieve the pains that some per
sons have with arthritis. That the
drug really worked was shown
by the fact that when its use
was discontinued the pain re
turned. Doubtless in every case
the administration of this power
ful and tricky drug will have to
be watched over by an able phy
sician. Dr. -Alvarez regrets he hasn't
the time in which to read or
answer requests for information.
