FIBROSITIS
Persons keep asking, what is
fibrositis? It is one of the com
monest of diseases which makes
I 'JiT"""! muscles and
I I the outsides of
VM'd. joints sore or
stiff or pain
ful. It seems
to be a sort of
mild younger
brother of ar
thritis. "What
is very good
about it is that
it does not
leave persons crippled in bed or
in a wheel chair. Many oldish
persons have suffered all their
days from fibrositis and they
still haven't any stiffened or de
formed joints. They may some
times get a little pain or stiffness
in a finger or hip or ankle; they
may sometimes limp a bit in the
morning, but after walking a
few blocks, they are all right
for the rest of the day. Some
times they are helped much by
getting into a tub of hot water
or being rubbed bit. Some
times, when their fingers are
sore and stiff, they get help from
contrast baths. They put their
hands for a few minutes in a pail
of hot water; then for a few min
utes in cold water, and so on,
back and forth.
Many persons with fibrositis
will get pain in the chest wall
due to soreness and tenderness
of the covering of some ribs or
of some muscles between the
ribs.
The doctor suspects fibrositis
when, after long illness, there is
no deformity of any joints. He
can be almost sure that it is fi
brositis when he measures the
red blood sedimentation rate and
finds it very low and hence nor
mal. This is so reassuring be
cause it tends strongly to rule
out rheumatoid arthritis, which
is the deforming and crippling
Coal is the source of about 70
per cent of the fuel and energy
produced in the Soviet Union.
The remaining 30 per cent is de
rived from wood and also from
various petroleum sources.

doctors are still checking the
health of 239 Pacific islanders
who were dusted with radioac
tive fallout by the super H
bomb tested at Bikini nearly two
years ago.
Although all of the islanders,
including a 100-year-old woman
and a number of babies, appar
ently have recovered from their
ordeal, they will be kept under
observation for months and per
haps years.
This was disclosed by the Of
fice of Naval Research in a re
cently published report. The
continuing medical check on the
dusted islanders presumably will
spot any delayed radiation ef
fects. At the same time, the Navy
and Atomic Energy Commission
