DANGERS IN
HELL-FIRE SERMONS
Today I am happy over the

sons. I have long been interested
in and delighted with this great
advance in the training of re
ligous teachers.
Why am I so pleased? Because,
every so often, in my office I
still see the ' devasting results
on the mind of a mildly psy
chotic young person of an old
fashioned hell-fire sermon, with
its accent on endless punish
ment for having committed, per
haps, "the unpardonable sin."
The point that the older, minis
ters did not know is that, while
such a sermon may do no-harm
to a sane person, it can almost
wreck the .sanity of a young
man or woman who is already
mildly psychotic 'and greatly in
clined to worry foolishly and
uncontrolledly over religious
.doubts, conscientious scruples,
and a . deep conviction of sin
and guilt.
Tfjcr W4ll Scare
I am driven to write on this
subject today because I just saw
a man jvjto, born almost psy
chotic, got along fairly well Un
til one evening in church his
minister gaye to a group of
boys an old-fashioned lecture
on the supposed mental deteri
oration and insanity that he felt
would result from masturbation.
(Today no informed doctor be
lieves in this'sort of thing.) The
minister evidently believed that
the est way of curing the. boys
of an almost normal habit was
to scare them "out of a week's
growth." He did so well that
my. patient tells me that he still
suffers mentally because of it.
On reaching home that night,
the lad went into a nervous
chill in which he shook the bed
and could not get warm. Later,
H broke out into a copious
sweat; he felt terribly nervous,
jittery, and filled with an aw
ful fear. Toward mornirig, he
decided he must commit suicide;
so far as he could see, that was
the only way out. Fortunately,
he got up and walked the streets
until he got control of himself.
Ever since, he- has. had re
turns of these panics in which,
for a few hours, he is ail-to-pieces
nervously, with a bad
case of the jitters.. He may then
belch for an hour, , he may
vomit; he may have cramps in
his abdomen, and he may get
a brief but violent attack of
diarrhea. His trouble doubtless
come from the fact that his
mother, his aunt and his brother
are insane.
Obviously, I am not trying to
tell my friends, the ministers,
how to preach; I do not know
much about that. I am just sug
gesting that, like me, they re
member that what is all right
for an eminently sane person
can. be terribly destructive to
a half -crazy youngster who can
easily pick up a new and devas
tating fear. I have' seen so many
persons all-to-pieces over fear
that unwittingly they had com
mitted the unpardonable sin
that,- if I were a minister, I
would jfiever mention the sub
ject. Similarly, in this column,
when". talking of headaches, I
never mention brain tumors.
Why? Because brain tumors in
adults are so- rare that I do not
see one in years. But if I here i
mentioned this disease and de
scribed the symptoms thousands
of my hypochondriacal and fear
ridden readers would immediate
ly jump to the conclusion that
they had a brain tumor. Then

Grafting Bona Onto Jaw
There is an operation in which
bone from somewhere in the
body can be grafted onto the
lower jaw bojie so as to make
a better ridge for the holding
of a denture. Some persons can
hardly wear a lower denture
because the ridge is gone.
. Recently, efforts are being
made also to implant bits of
bone into the lower jaw. Then
dentures can be fastened to these
pegs. I do not know yet how
well this experiment is going
to work out.
Dr. Alvarez regrets he hasn't

queens for their ' accomplish
ments, and I represented the mo
tion picture industry," the one
time glamour' girl of silent mo
vies recalled.
"Since them they've taken the
girls- from colleges. They've
never been interested in film ca
reers. Most married right away.
They didn't have that flare that
compels a woman to seek a ca
reer as an actress. You have to
hae drive."
Miss McEvoy admits the rose
queens are very pretty, but "to
go into show business you have
to have something else; some
talent."
Back in 1923 the crowds were
not so heavy on the streets for
her Rose Parade.- There was no

gether for a luscheon recently.
Many ex-queens have added a
few pounds ands fray hfir. All
are. housewives. Theys giggled
when ihe tosttmester called
them "queen mother)." But Miss

pursue a career.
She retired from pictures after
"The Jaxs Singer" in 1929 ?to
marry businessman Maurice
Cieary. Ten years, ago, her two
children grown, she returned to
