Drought-Resistant Range Grass Sought
Austin, Tex. (U.R) Univer
sity of Texas scientists are on
the trail of a drought-resistant
rangeland grass able to grow in
underdeveloped soil on lime
stone hills.
A recent report by Drs. Wal
ter V. Brown and W. Gordon
Whaley said the University of
Texas' plant research institute is
making definite progress in a
search for new grasses and le
gumes specifically adapted to
southwestern ranges.
Plants of side-oats grama
one of the important southwest
ern forage grasses show prom
ise of producing a strain that
grows well in winter or even
the year asound.
Researchers say they hope to
develop a drought-resistant hairy
grama that will grow in the under-developed
soils blanketing
limestone hills.
Other studies indicate good
possibilities "for evolving a
bristle-grass that remains green
well into the Texas summer.

Country Club Caught
In Web of Own Joke
Shenandoah, la. (U.R) The
Country Club, as a practical
joke, announced that a clothes
drier would be presented as a
door prize at a dance.
The prize winner was duly se
lected and announced, and
promptly presented with a
clothes line.
However, the protests from
patrons was such that a collec
tion was taken and the winner
received a real clothes drier.
Sob
er On New Years Eve
By JOHN BONING

Written for Uniled Prtis
New York (U.R) A hangover?
I've never had one in my life.
And let me tell you, I like to
celebrate New Year's Eve just
like the next guy.
I've been tending bar for 45
years and as I see it, the reason
most drinkers wind up with New
Year's Day hangover is that their
approach isj if I may use the
word, cock-eyed. They don't
know how to prepare for the
big occasion, what to drink or
even how to drink. Some drink
ers are even foolish enough to
take their cars out with them.
Actually, preparing' for New
Year's Eve is pretty simple. The
first rule is to get some rest be
fore you go out you have the
whole evening ahead of you, so
try to take a nap for an hour or
two before you start any cele
brating. Have a Good Meal
What you eat for dinner is
pretty important, too. Treat
yourself to a good, heavy meal
steak is probably the best, with
all the trimmings. The more
you fill your stomach up with
good nourishing food, the better
able your stomach will be to ab
sorb the alcohol you pour down
yourself.
Next, there's the drinking. As
far as I'm concerned, I like to
drink champagne. The second!
best, I think, is Scotch and wa
ter. But any good whiskey with
plain water should keep you
from getting sick.
There are three good rules to
remember in drinking. One, stay
away from sweet mixes. Two,
stay away from sweet, compli
cated drinks. And third, don't
mix your drinks thats' a cer
tain way to wind up sick.
Eat while you are drinking, it
slows down the guzzling. Ai a
matter of fact, if you guzzle just
for the sake of getting loaded on
New Year's Eve you're foolish
not only because it'll make
you ill, but because you're not
showing much appreciation for
good liquor.
Dancing Helps
Dancing is a good idea, too,
while you're celebrating. It helps
you burn off the alcohol, and
like eating, slows down the
guzzling.
Knowing when to stop is one
of the most important rules to
observe. There's no hard and
fast rule for this some people
should stop after two drinks,
some can polish off a dozen
drinks without showing it.
But there are some danger
signs. If you're the silent type
who suddenly starts talking a
lot, it's time to stop. If you're
a talker and suddenly go silent,
it's time to stop.
I've seen all kinds of drunks
in my years of tending bar
there are the singers and the
table-hoppers, there are the bot
tle throwers and the arguers, and
there are the kissing bugs. All
of them are people who just
don't know when to stop. And
many of them frequently wind
up with one red eye and one
black eye on New Year's Day.
Eat Again Before Sleep
Before you turn in for the
night, or the morning, it's a
pretty good idea to eat again.
I like milk with stale bread
just crumble some bread or rolls
about two weeks old in a milk
bowl. Or if you like, try a good
substantial sandwich with coffee
or milk.
If despite all hi, you -ind
up with a hangOTer, try hi lot

half cream with a coupla of raw
eggs beaten into it. Or tfy aating
as much ice cream as you cm,
