Small Business Administrator
Wendell B. Barnes predicted
that next year will see further
rise in earnings by small manu
facturers. He said the competi
tive position of small business
has been strengthened and "the
extremely low rate of business
failures is also a good sign for
the future."
Here is a sampling from the
major industry report:
Time
er; David, 7; Mrs. Eisenhower; the President,
holding Susan, 3; Mrs. Barbara Eisenhower,
and Barbara Ann, 6. The newest grandchild,
Mary Jean, remained in the Walter Reed
hospital.
Iron and Sieel Current rec
ordbreaking production momen
tum to continue through June,
1956, making first half of year
one of the highest "if not the
highest" in history.
Aluminum First half 1956
shipments expects to be at an
nual rate of 4,600,000,000 pounds
a new record and 18 per cent
above first half of this year.
Automobiles and trucks
Auto output first six months ex
pected to hit 4.250,000 compared
with the record of 4,227,000 in
the first half of this year. Truck
production should "show a size
able increase over the first half
of 1955" after finishing "the
best year in its history."
Construction Estimated
spending in 1956 on all new
construe t i o n $44,000,000,000,
five per cent above 1955's record
S42,000,000,000.
Strike Causes Drop
Power equipment New elec
tric generating units expected
to go into service in first half
will be "far below" previous
estimates because of the West
inghouse Electric Corp. strike.
Elecironics Output in 1956
expected to exceed this year"s
record of $6,300,000,000 by
$500,000,000.
Machinery A five to 10 per
cent rise in dollar volume of
farm machinery sales expected,
reflecting price increases. In
crease in unit sales "doubtful"
during first six months.
Lumber Output, expected to
set a record this year, may drop
off about two per cent during
first six months of 1956.
Consumer durable goods
sales in first six months ex
pected to "equal or slightly ex
ceed" record 1955 rate.
Meanwhile, the Federal Re
serve Bulletin reported that de
spite the record growth of con
sumer credit this year rising
incomes have kept the debt bur
den from becoming too heavy.
London Police Probe
Railway Accidents
( London (U.R) Police today
pushed an investigation into a
"deliberate" sabotage attempt
against the government - owned
railways, plagued by a month
long series of crashes and acci
dents that have killed 24 per
sons and injured more than 180.
Saboteurs were blamed for
cutting the main Bradford to
S k i p t o n line at Charleston.
Yorkshire, Tuesday. A track
walker found a heap of ballast
sand on the main line at one
point and lengths of unbolted
rails at another. The bolts were
missing and police said "it was
a deliberate attempt to sabotage
the line."

Quints Bolt
Papa Dionne
Callander, Ont. 'U.R) Oliva
Dionne. father of the quintu
plets, said today the four sur
viving quints have broken away
from their home in Callander,
and there was "no use" camou
flaging the fact.
Dionne said the girls did not
send their parents a Christmas
card, or call them on the tele
phone, or write them about their
Christmas plans. The girls spent
Christmas in Montreal.
Dionne said he and Mrs. Di
onne had realized for several
months that the girls had been
drifting away from the family.
He blamed the separation on
what he called "intruders," but
he refused to identify the so
called "intruders."
It was the first time that the
quints had not spent Christmas
with their family.
Is That So?
Despite man's proneness to
feel superior to the animals
about him, in many ways they
far outdo him thanks to their
incredibly keen senses. Con
sider: Taste: Many of us add a heap
ing teaspoonful of sugar to our
coffee to make it taste sweet.
Of course, our taste buds are
not that dull. But in tests, it has
been estimated that the average
human can detect sweetness of
sugar only if the solution ex
ceeds one part of sugar to 200
parts of mixer. Brother, that's
a long way from the taste delica
cy of flies. Some can detect the
presence of sugar when it is
only 1 part in 40,000! But think
nothing of that, many butter
flies can detect sugar when it
is only one part in 300,000. And
the butterfly has its tasting or
gans in the feet.
Hearing: A keen-eared human
can hardly catch a wrist watch
ticking at four feet. An average
dog can hear the ticking well
at 40 feet.
Heat sense: A human does re
markably well if he can notice
a temperature change of five
degrees. But pit vipers, who de
rive their name from the paired
little pits in their facial struc
tures, are much more sensitive.
In a laboratory experiment it
was found that if two light bulbs
were presented, these rattle
snakes would invariably strike
the warmer one. Even when the
difference was only two-tenths
of one degree centigrade.
Time sense:. Without looking
up, guess right now what time
it is. Now ask the person next
to you. How far off were you?
Fifteen minutes? That's not bad.
But a honey bee could " have
done better. In an experiment
conducted in England, food was
put out for honeybees at a regu
lar hour each day and the bees
soon learned to come flying in
from countryside at a regular
feeding hour. They were seldom
more than five minutes off!
Smell: Suppose wou were to
catch a female of one of our
large moths and hold it an inch
from your nose. Do you think
you could detect a faint odor
enough to differentiate it from
any other species? I doubt it.
But what of the male moth's
sense of smell? Put that female
on the inside of an open window
screen and wait a little while.
Presently, there will be a great
clustering of males on the screen,
drawn as if by a magic magnet.
Experimenting with some of
these larger moths, scientists
have found that male moths re
leased a mile away would find
their females. And if the wind
sat in the right direction, even
three miles away. Strictly by
smell. And not only could these
males always come to the right
species and there are hundreds
of species but also those males
could detect at that distance

Two of the quints. Yvonne
and Cecile. were training as
nurses in Montreal.
In Montreal, the Star report
ed that Marie and Annette had
taken an apartment in the west
end of the city and that Yvonne
and Cecile joined them there
during the Christmas weekend.
Dionne said the quints had
also cut their brothers and sis
ters off their Christmas card
mailing list this year.
"In fact," he said, "lately
they have been treating their
brothers and sisters almost with
contempt." Yvonne burst into
tears and denied her father's
statements about a rift.
The Star quoted Yvonne as
saying "Donf believe it, it's not
true." She said she and her
sisters had sent a Christmas card
home and added, "Is it our fault
if they didn't get it."

Revenue Agents To
Assist Taxpayers
Washington i(U.R) Internal
Revenue agents will fill out in
come tax forms for puzzled tax
payers next year after all.
Also, taxpayers will get all
the government help they need
in figuring out for themselves
how much they owe the govern
ment. T. Coleman Andrews, former
Internal Revenue commissioner,
had issued an order cutting
down federal assistance in mak
ing out tax blanks. His succes
sor, Russell C. Harrington, re
versed it Tuesday.
Andrews' order permitted tax
agents to fill out forms only for
taxpayers who are illiterate,
physically disabled or unable to
speak English. The order also re
duced the number of days a
week agents might help taxpay
ers fill out forms.
The new regulations were is
sued to improve efficiency.
Harrington ordered Internal
Revenue agents to fill out forms
for anyone who requests them
to do it.
