Pilot Killed When Southern Pacific
Jet Lands at LA
Los Angeles U.R) An Air
Force pilot, killed when his jet
plane shot off thea field at Los
Angeles International Airport
and crashed into an automobile,
apparently mistook a taxi strip
for the regular runway, officials
said today.
Air Force Capt. Dwight M.
Cook died at Daniel Freeman
Memorial0 hospital of severe
burns and other injuries Mon
day a few hours after his T33
jet trainer shot onto busy six
lane U. S. Highway 101, struck
the car' and then burned.
The Woman driving the car,
Mrs. Louise La Montagne, 25, of
Oakland, Calif., was reported
hurt, but not seftously.
Authorities said it was "a mir
acle" the accident was not worse.
Airport spokesmen said the
pilot apparently mistook a taxi
strip for a regular runway and
landed on it. Still rolling at high
q speed the plane shot off the
field. The taxiway, south of the
regular runways, takes a slight
jog as it nears the tunnel en
trance. he plane broke through a
wire fence, barely missed a small
radag building, skipped over a
couple of cars on the highway
and then hit Mrs. La Montagne's
auto. The pilot ejected himself
from the plane shortly after it
burst into flames. The plane

was scheduled today for the 45-year-old

Heart) in Montmartre.
Police said the court probably
would order a psychiatric ex
amination for Daniel Havas who
claimed he was acting as "the
hand of God" to halt atomic
bomb research.
Havas was arrested Monday.
Police found three partly-completed
bombs in his apartment.
They said he admitted placing
the time bomb in the famed
basilica on Christmas Eve. The
bomb was found some 50 min
utes before it was to go off
Christmas Day.
Havas was formally charged

a public building by an explo
sive substance."
Resumes Service
San Francisco (U.R) South
ern Pacific trains resumed regu
lar transcontinental service at
noon PST today.
Th'e SP's main line over the
Sierra has been blocked by a
landslide at Emigrant Gap near
Donner Summit.
The City of San Francisco and
the Overland were to leave at
their regular times today. In the
past days they have been routed
via Barstow.
The SP also announced trains
on the Shasta Route through
the Cascade Mountains in Ore
gon have resumed their regular
schedules. These include the
Shasta Daylight, the Klamath
and the Cascade.
The Western Pacific, its Feath
er River Route blocked by slides,
continued routing its transcon
tinental trains via Barstow.
Northern Pacific, an SP. sub
sidiary, has shut down all traf
fic between San Rafael and
Eureka.
Air Traffic Growth
Breaks All Records
Washington (U.R) American
air traffic broke all growth rec
ords in- 1955, according to the
Civil Aeronautics Administra
tion. CAA Chief Charles J. Lowen
said scheduled airlines carried
nearly 42 million passengers in
this country and abroad, 19 per
cent more than in 1954.
The CAA said air traffic in
this country alone increased 22
per cent in 1955. almost donhle
the previous year's rise and the
Diggest increase on record.
The safety record of U. S.
scheduled airlines within the
United States was estimated at
.75 passenger fatalities per 100
million passenger-miles flown.
This was a big drop in safety
over the 1954 rate of .09 fatalities.
Assistance Offered
By Eastern Governor
Hartford, Conn. (U.R) Gov.
Abraham A. Ribicoff today ex
tended sympathy and offers of
assistance to the people of flood
battered California, Oregon and
Nevada.
The governor sent wires to
Gov. Goodwin J. Knight of Cali
fornia, Gov. Paul L. Patterson
of Oregon and Gov. Charles H.
Russell of Nevada.
He said Conneticut was hit
by "two disastrous floods in two
months and that if the experi
ences here can be of help to
Western officials in future plan
ning he was ready to assist them.
Pope Pius Grants
Diplomats Audience
Vatican City (U.R) Pope
Pius XII received diplomats
from six nations in the first of
a six-day series of Christmas
audiences yesterday.
First to call on the Pontiff
was Kazimierz Papee, ambassa
dor from the anti-Communist
government in exile and ,dean
of the diplomatic corps accred
ited to the Holy See.
He was followed in separate
audiences by the envoys of Par
aguay, Panama, Columbia, In
dia and Egypt.
The reception of the latter
five diplomats broke the cus
tomary order of seniority. Ex
ceptions were made because the
ambassador of Paraguay, Ljis
Oscar Boettner, is leaving for
home tonight, and the envovs
of Panama, India and Egypt, all
newly appointed, were introduc
ing their families to the Pope
for the first time.
