As We Live
By ELIZABETH HUSLOCK, PH.D.
Cruelty To Elderly People
Should Not Be Tolerated
There are many people today
who have little respect for those
who are getting along in years.
There are
others, fortun
ately fewer in
number, who
seem to delight
in making eld
erly people
feel unwanted.
(Q) "Two years
ago, my father
died and left
my mother
alone with a
Dr. Hezlock
small sum of money. She could
have lived on ii but her health
was poor so I asked my husband
if he would object io her com
ing to live with us. My mother
fold me she would turn over
everything Dad left her and let
me have her furniture and house
hold things io use or sell in re
turn for my giving her a home.
"My husband consented gladly
to this because he was pressed
for money at the lime and was
glad to have the extra money
from my mother. Now he has
used up most of that money to
buy a car and he is very nasty
to my mother. He says and
does' things to make her feel un
wanted. She is very sensitive
about this and wants me to try
to put her in a .home but I have
refused.
"I think my husband is being
veiy unfair to her and very
cruel. I have told him this 'and
it is causing a lot of arguments.
I don't want to break up our
marriage because we have two
small children, but I don't want
to be unfair to my mother."
B. R.
(A) If your husband won't
listen to reason when you point
out to him how unfair he is be
ing to your mother, then take
this problem to your minister,
explain what your husband has
done with your mother's money
and how he is now treating her.
Perhaps your minister can make
him realize how unfair he is.,
I trust that you have kept
some evidence of the amount of
money your mother turned over
to you and a list of the house
hold articles you have from her
that you are using or have sold.
This can be used as a weapon
over your husband's head if such
a weapon is ever needed to make
him treat -your mother as he
should.
He had no right to use the
money she gave you for a car
and other personal things. He
must be made to realize that he
owes her a home and support
whether he likes it or not, as he
has taken her money and used
it for himself.
Be sure your minister empha
sizes this when he talks to your
husband.

Skirts To Be
Say Clothing
By ELIZABETH TOOMEY j
United Press Correspondent !
New York OJ.R) The future
looks interesting indeed. Men
now can look ahead with opti
mism, if not outright eagerness.
The things women are going
to wear in the year 2000 are
worth waiting for. Twelve well
known and reliable designers
have made up samples of the
clothes they predict will be pop
ular at the turn of the next cen
tury. In a word Wow!
Mollie Parnis, who designs
clothes for Mrs. Dwight Eisen
hower, predicts women will
wear thigh-high skirts for casual
occasions.
Oleg Cassini, who designs only
things with skirts now, predicts
they'll be out of date in 2000.
So will high-heeled shoes, Cas
sini says. Women will wear skin
tight trousers and antennas on
their hats.
Bosoms Almost Bare
Maurice Rentner, a conserva
tive, white-haired veteran in the
designing world, says bosoms
will be almost bare and the rest
of a woman's body will be cov
ered with a minimum of fabric:
The clothes will be designed
to be shown to television audi
ences .on New Year's day on
"Wide Wide World" over NBC
TV. A few of the . original
sketches had to be modified to
meet the network's rules on how
much can be revealed to family
audiences.
The show will be filmed live
from Palm Beach, Fla., fortu
nately, since a girl could catch
pneumonia in those outfits north
of the Mason-Dixon line.
"Temperatures will be con
trolled by filtering the sun's
rays so warmth in clothing will
be less important," Vincent
Monte Sano said. He designed a
coat of clear plastic for futuris
tic wear The plastic is a new
Du Pont product called "Mira
cle Milor," which is no thicker
than cellophane but as durable
as stainless steel.
Rentner's cocktail costume for
the young woman of 2000 con
sists of a brief necklace bras
siere of blue satin, a slinky satin
skirt slit to the hips on both
sides and a coin-studded cape of
silk organza which flutters from
the back of the necklace bras
siere strap.
Cassini created a one-piece
jersey suit that looks a little like
a ballet dancer's leotard, except
for the wires encircling the bo
soms and the radio telephone
attached to the belt buckle and
the earphones and antenna at
tached to the hood.
Skirts Must Go
"The suit will be tempera'
ture-controlled," Cassini ex
plained. "There is a battery un
der the bosom which controls
the warmth needed. The bosom
wires receive a slight vibration
trom the battery and have a

"Skirts must go" the designer
continued. "They will not be
funtional enough. And women
will get so much taller from all
the fresh air and exercise that
they'll stop wearing high heels."
Ben Reig designed a dinner
ensemble that consists of pink
mesh ' stockings studded with

sette skirt split to the waist in
four panels to show the sequin

Bohlen Comment
Bohlen commented that the
story of Catfish Row was a
singularly well-chosen opera"
for the first American appear
ance in Russia.
In a pre-curtain speech Boris
Sagurski, director of the Lenin
grad Maly theater, said,. "The
Soviet Union appreciates the
opportunity to become acquaint
ed with the operatic culture of
the United States and the great
talents of the American people.
Musical art transcends langu
age and therefore brings the peo
ple together," he said.
Konstantin Sergeev, ballet
master of the Leningrad Ballet
Theater, drew cheers when he
said, "Let this be the beginning
of our great and sincere friend
ship." The audience reacted enthusi
astically and with some puzzle
ment. The plot was difficult to
follow because the Russian pro
grams had not arrived from
Moscow. But most of those pres
ent seemed to like the music
and the staging.
