Non-Farm Work Drops in November
Salem (U.R) The number of
jobs reported by non-farm em
ployers dropped 13,700 last
month but remained 9800 high
er than in November, 1954, ac
cording to the State Unemploy
ment Compensation Commission.
Figures showed the total of
472,100 was about 25,000 under
the all-time seasonal peak of
last September and was nearly
35,000 more than last winter's
low in January and February.
Insured unemployment, as
measured by weekly claims at
local offices, has remained al
most constant this month but
is expected to increase consid
erably after the holidays.
Layoffs in lumber, construc
tion and food processing were
mainly responsible for the de
cline. Sawmills and logging out
fits dropped 660 to 61,900 jobs,
lowest since April and 2900 un
der a year ago. Construction
laid off 3800 down to 23,400,
slightly above 1954 comparisons.
Food processing also held up
with 17,700.

throne, celebrated his 22nd
birthday today and palace
sources said he is becoming in
creasingly concerned over his
unmarried status.
But the final decision in
selecting a wife will not be his
own.
The Imperial Household Board
is searching for a bride for the
young prince who may some
day succeed his f ather as em
peror of Japan. Palace atten
dants report that Akihito has
been concerned over their fail
ure to find a suitable candidate
and has discussed the problem
on a number of occasions with
the Imperial Household Board.
