Kidnaping Told
By Missionary
Clark AFB, Philippines U.R)
Dr. Homer Bradshaw, Ameri
can medical missionary from
Pennsylvania held for nearly
five years by the Communist
Chinese, said yesterday he and
hii wife were "kidnaped" by the
Reds.
The Bradshaws were released
from Red China earlier this
week. They crossed the border
to freedom at Hong Kong and
were flown here in a U. S. Air
Force hospital plane.
Both were in pitiable physical
condition when freed. They are
being treated for malnutrition
and beri beri in the 6208th U.S.
Air Force hospital here. In ad
dition, Mrs. Bradshaw is emo
tionally upset and only occasion
ally realizes where she, is and
that she is free.
However, Air Force doctors
said the two Presbyterian medi
cal missionaries may be strong
enough to travel to the United
States in two weeks.
"We were kidnaped," Brad
shaw said0 flatly when he de
scribed the arrest of him and
his wife by the Chinese Commu
nists on March 2, 1951.
"We were separated and the
conditions were abominable. I
don't want to talk about what
happened there. It was there
that Mrs. Bradshaw was driven
into her mental depression."

Comment On This and That
By HARMAN W. NICHOLS

Washington (U.R) My friend
Norman C. Consterdine of De
troit is the only man I know who
looks upon
failure as a
compliment.
Norman has
invented a lot
of things. All
of them to
m im ! hslo Deonle.
Like how to

d o w without
leaning out
Herman Nichols some and risk
ing life and limb. How to swat a
fly without moving off the
couch.
.Things like that. None of these
ever have been patented.
But, according to my Detriot
friend, some of his ideas have
been picked up, patented and
put on the market. Instead of be
ing sore and running for a law
yer he says.
"I find this situation most
heartening. It serves to cast a
certain favorable reflection on
the basic soundness of the ideas
themselves. It gives me a great
lift."
Moves One Finger
A great lift is what Conster
dine needs. It's something he
never has had in his life, except
from the daily confession his

parish priest hears at his bedside.
The man is 39 years old. He
never has walked, or moved a
muscle, hardly, except his one
typing finger. He's been a bed
ridden victim of cerebral palsy
since boyhood. His speech comes
with hesitation. He can't even
feed himself. He depends on his
mother for everything. That in
cludes lifting his movable fing
er atop a typewriter, which Mrs.
Consterdine props in front of
him on a couple of pillows. It
takes the man three days to
write a letter such as he wrote
me.
But Norman isn't complaining,
The guy knows that the patent
laws are tricky. It is hard, in
deed to protect your brain chil
dren if you don't have a patent
lawyer. Norman never could af
ford one.
Wants To Help
Norman's father died when he
was young. His stepfather died
not long ago. His mother- has been
his nurse and has taken care of
his every need. For 39 years.
He wants to do something for
her, to take some of the load
off."
So, if he can swing it somehow,
Norman hopes to go into some
kind of business, which he can
handle from his bed. A business
that might help well people. And
what is best of all, at the yule
tide, he thinks maybe he could
get handicapped people to work
for him as salesman.
It's folks like Norman who
make us thankful we can be up
and kicking. Whatever he has in
mind, let's wish the man luck.
