Matches and Cigarette Lighters
May Be To Blame in Lung Cancer

New York U.R) In lung can
cer it is more logical and more
scientific to blame the match or
fuel-burning lighter which lights
a cigarette than the cigarette it
self, according to a cancer spe
cialist who is well known in the
(Scientific world.
No one has succeeded in iso
lating a cancer-causing substance
from Otobacco, but burning
matches and fuel-powered light
ers are "carcinogen factories in
feiniature," said Dr. Joseph L.
Decourcey of the Decourcey
Clinic of Cincinnati.
"carcinogen" is any sub
stance which can cause cancer.
"Among the known sources of
cancer causing compounds, the
richest to which human beings
are commonly exposed" are
matches and fuel-burning light
ers, he asserted.
Admittedly he was suggesting
a theory. But theorizing on a
basis of logic is a powerful sci
entific muscle.
?Dr. Decourcey had a very solid
fact upon which to- build his
theory. It fact that there are
carcinogens in "tarry soot and
oily fumes."

The maximum punishment on

suggested a "new interpretation"

theory explains a statistical fact
which has embarrassed scientists
who have indicted cigarettes. It-
is that cigar and pipe-smokers,
even heavy ones are much less
susceptible to lung cancer than
cigarette smokers.
Difference Explained
Some of the former use
matches and lighters more fre
quently than cigarette smokers.
However, he pointed out much
more "salivation" is involved in
pipe and cigar smoking if the
carcinogens in soot and fumes
are water-soluble, they would be
highly diluted by saliva which
would protect the pipe and cigar
smokers. '
He pointed also to recent sta
tistics suggesting heavy-drinking
heavy cigarette smokers
have a higher incidence of lung
and laryngeal cancer than mere
ly heavy smokers. No one would
suggest that "ethyl alcohol is a
co-carcinogen" along with cig
arette smoke, he remarked but
heavy drinkers are "eager
breathers clumsy with a match
or fuel-burning lighter.
All this is going to be set forth
in the next issue of the bulletin
of the Decourcey Clinic. The
bulletin is going to say that the
burning match and lighter have
been completely overlooked in
scientific research and it's time
to find out what they add to the
cigarette besires fire.

Peddicord'sWife
Asks Committal
Portland (U.R) Mrs. William
Peddicord, whose blind husband
and a younger sister have been
jailed in connection with last
April's extortion bombing of the
Meier and Frank department
store, yesterday asked for com
mittment to Oregon state hospi
tal at Salem.
Dr. N. M. Janzer, director of
the division of mental health for
the Portland city health bureau,
emphasized that Mrs. Peddicord
was not mentally ill. He describ
ed her condition as mental de
pression. "Unfortunate as this pre
Christmas committment may
seem," he said, " it is in her
best interests because we have
future Christmases to think of
for her.'
Mrs. Peddicord is the mother
of five small children. They are
being cared for by friends.
A single publishing company

Ford Salaries Not
Highest in Business
Detroit (U.R) Salaries paid to
Ford Motor Company's key of
ficials aren't the highest in the
automobile business.
The prospectus filed by Ford
in regard to the coming stock
sale showed today that Ernest
Breech, chairman of the board
and the man credited with the
big postwar resurgence of the
company, and President Henry
Ford II each were paid $321,000
in direct remuneration this year.
They each picked up $1000 extra
as directors of Ford of Canada.
The last General Motors' proxy
statement showed that President
Harlow H. Curtice received a
total of S686.100 in 1954. That
included $201,100 in salaries and
fees, $68,681 in stock and $416,
319 in cash bonus.
Atomic Cruiser May Join
Fleet Within Three Years

cruiser, probably will join the
fleet in another three years.
Funds to start work on the
revolutionary new ship will be
sought in a defense budget which

New York (U.R) Sperry-Rand
Corp. today announced plans for
construction of an advanced
flight research center and a mod
ern plant in Phoenix, Ariz, to
develop and manufacture avia
tion electronics equipment.
The giant firm said included
in its new industrial develop
ment package are a modern
hangar and shop space at the
Phoenix .Sky Harbor Airport and
a plant and engineering facility
in the Greater Phoenix area.
Planned Within Year .
Herbert C. Bostwick, aviation
division manager, said construc
tion of the new plant should
start within a year, "depending
upon settlement of land acquisi
tion and related matters." In
itial plans now are being drawn,
he said.
The company did not reveal
the cost of the plant, but it is
reported it will be In the multi
million dollar category and em
ploy around 3000 persons.
Bostwick said the company
chose the Phoenix area because it
will p e rm i t the company "to
serve more adequately industry
in the Pacific, Southwest and
Central states" andi enable the
company "to satisfy military and
commercial air requirements not
only more rapidly but in much
greater volume."
$10,000 Offered for
One-Day Appearance
Chicago U.R) The Oriental
Theater has offered actress
Mamie Van Doren $10,000 for a
one-day personal appearance.
Richard Beck, managing di
rector of the theater, said he has
offered Miss Van Doren the sum
to appear Saturday, the day be
fore Christmas, for the opening
of her picture, "The Second
Greatest sex."
Beck said he believes Miss
Van Doren could overcome the
pre-holiday theater doldrums.
