Survey Crooked
Coastal Section
Portland U.R) The State
Highway Commission decided
yesterday to survey a crooked
four-mile section of the Coast
highway between Bay City and
Garibaidi to see if it can feasibly
be straightened out.
O The survey, to benade next
spring or summer, was granted
at the request of a Tillamook
delegation headed by County
Judge O. E. Effenberger.
Site Sale Asked
In another petition, former
o Rep. Lowell Stockman of Pen
dleton asked the highway body
to sell a lumber campsite on the
north fork of the John Day river
back the Pilot Rock Lumber
company. The land was deeded
to the commission several years
ago as part of a highway beauti
fication program.
. The commission decided to ad
vertise the property at auction
within the next two months.
To Lower Roadbed
Commissioners agreed to low
er roadbed on the Pendleton
Walla Walla route to permit 14
foot clearance at a railroad over
pass. T qommission turned down
a. request to designate the por
tion of the old U.S. 30 highway
between Boardman and Stan
field as "U.S. 30 Bypass." Spon
sors of the move had hoped that
would help lead travel to Mc
Nary dam. The commission said
it had no such authority for a
federal highway and indicated it
was not in favor of plains o di
vert through traffic fromjntiajor
routes to local points of interest.
Saturday Closing
Oi AH Bars Urged
Portland OJ.P.) The Oregon
Licensed Beverage association
today urged its member bars and
taverns to close their doors vol
untarily Saturday night to en
courage both patrons and em
ployeeso spend Christmas Eve
with their families.
The &sociation also announc-
ed a novel plan to discourage
drinking drivers. It sent to Port
land taverns and bars a sign
which reads. "Let us arrange
for a non-drinking driver to
drive your car home."

Cost of Living
Shows Increase
In Past Month
Washington (U.R) The cost
of living edged up again last
month.
The government report said
today that price rises on 1956
autos and other items more than
offset declining food, prices.
The report also showed that
average factory take home pay
reached a new record level for
the third straight month and that
the purchasing power of average
factory pay also set a new record.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics
said its consumer price index
climbed .1 of 1 per cent to reach
115 per cent of average 1947-49
prices for the first time since
August, 1954.
Picture of Stability
Deputy BLS Commissioner
Aryness Joy Wickens said the
price picture is still "one of con
siderable stability" "despite
creeping increases in the last
half of the year. She said the out
look is for "no marked change"
in the index over the next few
months.
The BLS reported that the
average factory worker with
three dependents earned $72.85
a week after taxes in November.
This was about 80 cents higher
than October and 14.67 higher
than in November, 1954. More
overtime as well as wage in
creases contributed to the gain.
First Degree Murder
Charged in Slayings
Tillamook '(U.R) Grant Bai
ley, 33, Rockaway, was charged
yesterday with first degree mur
der, in the double slaying last
Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Peecard of "Warm Springs at
Bailey's home.
The complaint was filed by
Tillamook county Chief Deputy
Sheriff Haillie Island. Bailey
was arraigned before Justice of
the Peace Walter J. Herd and
the case was continued until to
day to give Bailey time to con
sult with an attorney.
Bailey told officers the shoot
ings occurred during a fight aft-
er he had ordered the Peecards
from his home.
Bell Will Retain
Union Presidency
Portland (U.R) Results of
a ballot recount, announced yes
terday, showed that Jess Bell
of Portland will retain the presi
dency of the Oregon State In
dustrial Union council.
Bell was declared defeated
earlier by Francis R. Lenaburg
of Willamina. But Council Ex
ecutive Secretary George Brown
said that unintentional errors in
transcribing6 votes by three local
unions had thrown the vote off.
The corrected vote gave Bell
1748 votes to Lenaburg's 1065.
The council is an organization
of former CIO unions which will
be merged with the AFL's Ore
gon State Federation of Labor
in line with the recent labor
union merger.
Mexican Mayor Fired
For Cattle Rustling

gators accused him of heading a
gang of cattle rustlers.
