Fall made its farewell appear
ance today 2nd set a high mark
of sub-zero cold and icy stcfrms
forjtjie oncoming winter to shoot
at.
. ONev Sngland and the North
era Plains were a sub-zero ice
O box." A new Alaska storm
threatened rain battered North
ern California and a two-day
snowstorm buried autos and
piled up two feet of snow on the
famed tfci runs of Sun Valley
Ida.

The death toll rose elsewhere
in thiPacific Northwest, where
flood waters killed two persons,
and in the frostbitten East. In
addition, some of the iciest wea
ther in European history was
blamed for 22 deaths.
The storms and cold provided
a fitting end for the fall of 1955,
which will give way to winter
at precisely 10:12 a.m. (EST) to
morrow. The last full day of fall
G today as also the shortest day
of the year, since the sunshine
will start lasting longer after
winter's arrival.
Eastern Cold Wave
The East was feeling the bite
of the season's bitterest cold
wave, with temperatures well
below zero throughout New Eng
O land's interior and near zero
along the Atlantic Coast.
Mile-high Mt. Washington in
New Hampshire was the frosti
est spofcin the nation. The mer
cury dipped to 26 below there
early today, adding to the miser
ies of fou Boston television en
gineers who were marooned on
the peak following a Sunday
program.
The eastern cold was too
much for a 20-year-old Texan
who nearly froze while trying to
hitch hike back to his home
state. The chilled westerner,
James A. Jones, Wichita Falls,
O used a dime of his last 20 cents
to telephone Rochester, N.Y.,
state police to "lock me up on
any charge. Just put me some
place where it's warm."
Kindly Policeman I
The kindly policeman rescued
Jones from the 10-above cold
Qand put him in jail for five days
on a vagrancy charge.
In the West, a new Alaskan
storm, moved into Northern Cal-
ifornia in the wake ,of flooding
'rains which caused $2,100,000
Qmage. The storm threatened to
send more pounding rains, even
as an estimated 150 families
were returning to their homes
O along the falling Russian and
Eel rwers.
Mean while, temperatures
eased in the Midwest and shot up
dramatically into the 60s and 70s
in Colorado and New Mexico.
The warm chinook winds in the
West weren't precisely welcome,
since they all but ruined any

Eugene Extortion
Plot Revealed
Eugene (U.R) An "amateur
ish" extortion attempt against
the manager of a Eugene Safe
way store was disclosed yester

Howard D. Barnhart, manager

extortion attempt when he
called police and notified them
of an extortion note left in his
store last Saturday night.
Contents of the note were re
vealed yeserday. It read, "Barn
hart, we are holding your wife,
Vera. She left the house on a
fake call. We picked her up.
We want your week-end re
ceipts. . Talk to no one. No
phone calls, no tails. We'll be
back in an hour telling you
where to pick her up. Be stupid
and you'll pick her up in the
river."
Police Chief Vern Hill said
the extortion try was "amateur
ish" and that several persons
were being checked. Store em
ployees reported a man in the
store acting suspiciously the day

Right To Generalize
On Future Upheld
Chicago (U.R) Historians
have both a right and an obliga
tion to generalize about the fu
ture on the basis of what they
know about the past, a Univer
sity of Chicago historian says.
Prof. Louis Gottschalk told
social scientists meeting at the
university recently that the his
torian is no less a scholar for
stepping out of his role as re
corder of the past.
He said the historian who spe
cializes in the history of World
War II has an obligation to ap
ply his knowledge to help pre
vent World War III. And the
historian who specializes in a
study of the League of Nations
is obligated to help prevent the
collapse of the United Nations,
Gottschalk said.
"What would one think of a
mathematician or a physicist
who, when asked what . he
thought about the trends of
mathematics or physics, claimed
that in so predicting he was not
acting as a mathematician or
physicist?" Gottschalk asked.
"Yet a comparable claim is
common among historians," he
said. "Depart from your sources,
the 'pure' historians believe, and
you cease to be a historian. As
if the sources had any validity
unless checked against the time
less realities of human experience."

Doctor Surprises
Professor With Quote
Otago, N.Z. (U.R) Red-tape
restrictions on foreign doctors
who want to practice in New
Zealand have had some embar
rassing sequels, of which the fol
lowing is perhaps the best or
worst.
In order to win the right to
practice, an immigrant doctor
had to attend the New Zealand
university for three years.
During an apparently boring
lecture, the lecturer, a professor
of long-standing, noticed that the
doctor was dozing. The mis
creant was sharply awakened
and asked to repeat what the
lecturer had been saying.
The "student" doctor as
tounded the lecturer and the
class by obliging with a lucid
precis of all that had been said,
and, as an afterthought, gave
the name of the medical text
book from which the lecturer
had been quoting.
When the professor voiced his
astonishment, the erring student
said, "as a matter of fact, I wrote
it."
