Combating Fires Discussed
At Forest Service Meeting
Action taken to combat forest
fires during the current year an4
suggestions for improving fire
fighting methods were discussed
af a two-day meeting of United
States Forest Service personnel
in the Federal building recently.
Cooperation received from
other agencies and private in
dustry while combating numer
ous explosive lorest fires last
September was praised accord
ing to Jack Woods, supervisor
of the Rogue River National
forest. c
KorQCompleie0 Listing
It was suggested that a more
complete listing of equipment
available for fire fighting from
private industry ghould be
"'made, and additional training
in fire fighting techniques
should be available to foremen
and supervisors of private in
dustry crews.
Need for a local observer, fa-
miliar with terrain where0 there
might be several fires close to
each other, to accpmpany and
direct planes carrying smoke
0 jumpers was pointed out.
Many fires in a small area on
the Cascade divide this year re
sulted in some confusion when
smoke jumpers, directed only
by lookout informatin were not
. o
certain about which of the fires
were most badly in need of
fighters.
Additional ' Training
It was also pointed out at the
meeting that additional training
in time-keeping and behind-the-lines
activites might be benefi
cial. About 35 Forest service per
sonnel attended the meeting
which was conducted by S. T.
Moore, fire control assistant of
Rogue River National forest.
Kermit W. Lindstedt, Portland,
assistant regional forester in
charge of fire control; and Ralph
A. James, Yreka fire control as
sistant of the Klamath National
forest, were among those who
attended.

Korean Commies
Accused in Firing
On UN Helicopter
Munsan, Korea (U.R) The
U.N. Military Command charged
the Communists today with "in
discriminate" firing upon an un
armed U.N. helicopter.
The U.N. command disclosed
that one of its "unarmed heli-
coptors" was fired upon on Dec
7 by Communist guns when it
"inadvertently flew over -Red
controlled territory east of Kae-
song."
The United Nations said the
Reds fired on the American
made helicopter with anti-aircraft
guns. However, the ' heli
copter was not hit.
"It is evident," U. S. Navy
Capt. David L. Roscoe told the
Red military command, "that
your side is determined to shoot
down every U. N. command air
craft which comes within range
of your weapons."
Roscoe, secretary of the U.N.
side of the Joint Military Armi
stice Commission, delivered his
protest to North Korean Army
Col. Li Yong in a meeting at
the Panmunjom truce village.
Roscoe told the Communist offi
cer that three U.N. fliers have
been "killed under similar cir
cumstances" during the past 12
months.
"We protest strongly against
indiscriminate attacks," Roscoe
told Yong. "Each of these need
less attacks has added proof of
the insincerity of your side
which has often proclaimed high
humanitarian principles."
The U.N. announcement said
the pilot of the "bubble" type
helicopter became confused and
"mistaRingly flew oyer Commu
nist controlled territory," but
did not say how far into the Red
region the craft got.
Name of the pilot was not
revealed. - -

Housing Programs
Benefit Communities
Chicago (U.R) Local public
housing programs have brought
added advantages to a number
of communities, a group reports.
The Journal of Housing,
monthly magazine of the Na
tional Association of Housing
and Redevelopment Officials,
said housing programs are ac
complishing much more than
their basic purpose of replacing
slums and providing shelter for
low-income families.
As some of the benefits to
specific communities, it listed:
A new residential subdivision
has grown up in Orlando, Fla.,
in an area where two public
housing projects were among the
first to break ground.
Values in Chino, Calif., have
risen an estimated 250 to 300
per cent for land next to two
public projects there.
Public housing projects built
In Puerto Rico . brought water
systems and sewage disposal fa
cilities to adjoining neighbor
hoods that did not have them be
fore. Louisville, Ky., now has five
community buildings and 43
more acres of playground space
as part of the program of the
city's public housing agency.

campaigning Maine officeholder.
Rep. Charles P. Nelson (R-Me.)
instead is sending new parents a
letter informing them of an "ex
cellent" government booklet
entitled "Infant Care."
Rosemary Clooney Prefers Records
New York (U.R) Rosemary
Clooney would rather make rec
ords than movies. Why?
"Because," she said, "you can
still make records when you're
pregnant."
Rosemary, married to actor
Jose Ferrer has one child,
Miguel, but she wants five more
"just like him."
Another reason for Rosie lik
ing the record business is sum
med up in one word flexibility.
"If they need you to record
something in a great big hurry,
you don't have to be in New
York or Hollywood," she ex
plained. "You can cut a record
in any big city, here or in Eu
rope." Rosie's preference also has its
sentimental side, for it was her
Columbia disk, "Come-On-A-My-House,"
that first established
her as a star.
"And to think," she recalled.
"Mitch Miller (Columbia's artist
and repertoire chief) had to ar
gue with me to make that rec
ord. Since then, I've let Mitch
pick my songs. I don't argue
with him any more."
Career and Marriaga
Rosemary and her sister, Bet
ty, started their professional
singing careers on radio station
WLW in Cincinnati as teen
agers. Tony Pastor heard them
and hired them for his band.
The girls traveled all over the
country, sometimes doing 60
songs a night.
Ironically, the first time Eosie
ever suffered from laryngitis
was when she was booked into
a Chicago theater, her first "im
portant" booking as a single. To
this day she is convinced that
laryngitis among singers is
chiefly psychosomatic. She a-s
it sometimes develops when
they feel they won't be able to
live up to an audience's expec
tations. She hasn't been bother
ed lately.
