sion project for the Public Ser
vice building here, Oregon's tall
est office building, was announ
ced Saturday by Paul B. McKee,
president of Pacific Power and
Light. The project would make
the building one of the largest
office structures on the west
coast.
Beginning in the spring, each
of the five story wings of the
building will be increased to the
12-floor level of the main shaft
of the building which rises to
16 floors. The expansion will
add 43,000 square feet of floor
space, bringing the total to 219,
560 square feet.

Dr. Hoppe, in a German journ
al, has just announced that by
v-ina the Rh factors in blood
he has been
able to determ
i n e paternity
in 2,200 cases,
with an accur
acy of -99.7 per
cent. In a court
case, what
blood tests do
is not so much
to say that a
certain man is
a cnna s iacner, but rather that
a certain man could not possibly
be the child's father.
As Dr. Reed says in his new
and fascinating book on Genetics
Counseling years ago blood tests
satisfied the scientists consulted
that Charlie Chaplin could not
possibly have been the father
of a certain child. Unfortunately
for him, the jurymen were not
experts on blood grouping and
hence they paid no attention to
this evidence.
Dr. Reed tells of a case in
which a prominent but mentally
upset man, on becoming para
noic, got the idea firmly fixed
in his head that one of his chil
dren was not his. The scientists
called in by the distracted moth
er soon said that practically all
of their large battery of tests had
shown that the husband should
be the father. It would have been
very hard to find in that city
another man who, with all the
blood peculiarities noted, could
have . been the father of that
child. Because of the man's lack
of sanity the doctors did not ex
pect this proof to influence him,
but to the mother's great joy it
satisfied him entirely, and he and
his wife and child were imme
diately reconciled.
Other Features
Naturally, when it comes to
establishing paternity, there are
other features that can be used,
such as the color of the hair
and eyes, the appearance of the
hair and its distribution on the
scalp, long or short fingers, and
so on. I remember one of my
patients, a man who had a red
dish patch of skin running up
on his forehead over his right
eye. He said to me one day in
fun "If I were a distrustful man.
I could rest my mind in peace
because every one of my four
boys has the same patch in the
same place on his forehead."

reported Edgar Goerlitz, 33, of
Shasta Valley, died yesterday in';
