spent his grown up years in a
vain search for
the perfect
steak, has
something to
say about the
campa i g n to
get holiday tip

rice. "It becomes relatively de
ceptive. People have pounded
into them that a couple of
cups of coffee are going to
straighten them out. Not a barrel
of the stuff, boiling hot, will
sober a person up after he had
had a parcel of potent martinis.
I go along with the slogan that if
you drink, don't drive."
It wasn't hard to smoke Drei
cer out on the subject of letting
somebody else do the cooking,
especially around the holidays.
He's made a career out of finding
the best places to eat around the
world, and has put his thoughts
on paper in a little ditty called
"The Diner's Companion."
Expensive Night Out
He says that if you want to cut
down on expenses on New Year's
Eve, for instance, it is a good
idea to go some place where they
have no cover or minimum
charge. "
That is, if you have to go out.
"This simply means you go in
and pay for what you order,"
Maurice says. "Otherwise what
happens? In a fancy joint, for a
table of four, like as not you will
wind up paying $20 per head in
advance. Eighty dollars right
there, plus tax. Add what you
spend for champagne, food, and
federal tax, and you wind up
spending maybe a couple of hun
dred bucks, plus a big dig out of
your pocket for the waiter, the
head waiter, the bus boy and the
girl from whom you buy back
your bonnet."
According to our expert on
that sort of thing, about all a New
Year's reveler winds up with is
a handful of noisemakers that
could be boughtt the drug store
for a quarter, plus a hangover
that c6st a pretty penny.

So the food counselor suggests
that folks beware. Go to some
place that has a reputation for
treating folks right; one with
great professional pride. Also,
Maurice says on times like New
Year's Eve, you will find service
slow.
"When you make a reserva
tion, it's for the whole evening,"
he explains. "The waiters are in
no particular hustle to see that
you eat. Running up your bar
bill brings m more money for
the house and more tips for the
man with the tray."
Maurice says that "one good
point" about New Year's Eve is
that most proprietors are able to
get an all-night license.
We in this town have some
news for the expert. Like as not
most celebrants will celebrate
this New Year's Eve on Saturday
night. The law here says that the
bars must close at the stroke of
midnight on Saturdays. New
Year's comes on the Sabbath.
When nothing but beer can be
bought. It has been a long time
since anybody winked at the law.
So mama and I will sit at
home, shoes off, looking at tele
vision. And at the stroke of 12
we will open the sash, wave a
lace hanky, say a howdy to the
dawn of 1956, and hit the sack.
We'll wake up, bright eyed and
ready to face the challenge of
whatever the New Year has to
offer. Will you?

Greensky Jr., an Indian, didn't
have to go far to get his buck
on the opening day of the deer
season. Greensky, who lives just
outside the city limits, said he
spotted a buck in his backyard
and bagged it with one shot. The
five-point deer weighed 170
pounds.
