Man, Woman Badly Burned in Atfe
Torch Murder in Oakland Apartment

Oakland, Calif. (U.R) An
Oakland waitress and a steel
worker were critically burned
early today when an intruder
apparently slipped into a bed
room, poured gasoline over them
and set them on fire in an at
tempted torch murder.
The victims, Mrs. Alice Frank
lin, 37, &.d Robert Leo Hand,
27, were in "very critical" con
dition at Kaiser Permaente hos
pital here, Mrs. Franklin with
burns over 90 per cent of her
body and Hand with burns cov
ering 93 per cent of his body.
Police said they were look
ing for a man, who formerly
went with Mrs. Franklin, for
questioning in the gruesome
murder ampt.

Officers said Mrs. Franklin
and Hand apparently had been
out "on the town" during the
evening and arrived at her apart
ment at about 2:30 a.m. 0
0 Shortly after they retired to
O the bedroom of Mrs. Franklin's
three-room apartment the in
truder apparently soaked the
two sleepers with gasoline and
poured quantities of the liquid
on the bedclothes, rug and furni
ture and then lighted it.
A violent explosion rocked the
building at about 4 a.m. and a
roaring fire followed the blast.

Welfare Group Asks
Teacher Pay Boost
Portland (U.R) The welfare
committee of the Oregon Educa
tion Association called today for
an increase in the state's mini
mum teacher salaries. ,
DeVere Taylor of Medford,
chairman of the committee, said
a floor of S3400 was advocated
for teachers with less than a
bachelor's degree; S3700 for
those with a bachelor's degree
and S400 for those with a mas
ter's degree. The present state
schedule calls for minimums of
$3000, S3300 and S3600.
The OEA representative coun
cil will act upon the recom
mendation next March. If ap
proved it will be submitted to
the 1957 Legislature.

Police were unable to explain
how the intruder managed to
gain entrance to the apartment
and pour gasoline on the bed
without awakening them.
The explosion did an esti
mated $1,500 damage to the
building.
Officers were not clear on
Mrs. Franklin's marital status.
One report said she was in the
process of getting a divorce and
another said she was divorced
about a year ago.
Hand recently was discharged
from the Air Force.
Tenneson Says

today his conscience guided him
to acceptance of Communism in
Red China, but "I have betrayed

prisoners. He showed no remorse
for turning his back on his na

The 22-year-old ex-soldier ap
peared happy at being able to
spend Christmas at home with
his mother, Mrs. Portia Howe.
His stopover in Tokyo was
brief. A little over an hour after
he arrived he left aboard a
Northwest Airlines flight for
Seattle.
Special Care Arranged
The Communists said they
had arranged special care for
Mrs. Bradshaw of New York
City during the train trip from
Canton to the Hong Kong bor
der. The Communists said she
was given permission to leave
last month but her physical con
dition was so poor she was un
able to sign her application for
an exit permit.
Her husband, a Presbyterian
missionary, was reported still in
a .Canton prison. Both the Brad
shaws were on a list of Ameri
can prisoners the Reds said they
would free.
Freezing Rain Falls
In Portland Area
Portland (U.R) East winds
in the Columbia gorge slacked
off last night but freezing rain
fell in the Portland area at
dawn and turned streets into
skating rinks.
The freezing rain was reported
at Bonneville at 4:37 a.m. and
at Gresham about 5 a.m. It
spread to the Portland area,
causing motorists grief during
the early morning rush hour.
The forecast called for oc
casional showers through Fri
day with decreasing east winds
The wind reached one gust esti
mated at 70 miles per hour at
Cascade Locks yesterday. Last
night the strongest gust reported
in the Portland area was 31
miles per hour.

Fly Irritates Farmer;

Herbert Dillon sat on his porch
one night to relax with a book
and an after-dinner cigar. But a
fly kept buzzin' around him.
Dillon grabbed a .32 caliber
revolver from a stand nearby
and took a swat at the fly.
The gun went off, leaving Dil
lon with a bullet wound in his
left thigh.
The fly buzzed off without a
scratch.
Arizona Police
Crack Counterfeit
Plot in Making
Phoenix 'CU.R) Phoenix
police disclosed today that two
men had been arrested in con
nection with an alleged plot to
counterfeit "possibly a million
dollars" in an office of the Ari
zona Highway Department.
Capt.Orme Morehead identi
fied the two men as David E.
Stonehocker, 29, a multilith off
set press operator for the High
way Department, and William E.
Shearer, 26, a salesman for the
Mountain States Telephone and
Telegraph Co.
Federal Charges Due
He said federal charges of
counterfeiting were being pre
pared against both men.
He said police had been work
ing "day and night since the
middle of November" on the
case.
Morehead said that about 100
pounds of "quality bonded paper,
enough to print about 3200,000
in counterfeit S10 and S20 bills,"
had been confiscated. He said of
ficers also had' taken possession
of "negatives on $10 "and $20
bills."
Morehead said police believed
no counterfeit money had been
printed.

10 years in Soviet prison camps
without ever being tried.

was never sentenced and the

PSC Enrollment
Increase Expected
Portland (U.R) Registrar
Howard Impecoven today pre
dicted that enrollment at Port
land State College will go up
17 to 18 per cent next fall. He
said enrollment probably would
reach 3200 or 3400.
Registration at the new school
this year jumped about 19 per
cent with a total of 2800.

without injury. The landing gear
gave way when the plane touch

Association of Housing and Re
development Officials reports
that two city housing authori
ties won sizeable insurance pre
mium rebates because of their
safety records.
The association said that the
San Francisco, Calif., housing
authority was returned 812,714,
two-thirds of its 1954 insurance
premiums. At Dallas, Tex., a re
bate of S3, 998 was nearly half
the annual premium.
