Minimum Salary
Schedules Asked
By OEA Group
Establishment of a statewide
minimum salary schedule was
called for in a motion approved
by the economic welfare com
mittee of the Oregon Education
association at a meeting Decem
ber 10 of the group at the asso
ciation's headquarters building
in Portland.
The recommendation of the
group is to be acted upon by the
association's representative coun
cil in March, and if approved by
the policy making body, will be
submitted to the 1957 Oregon
State Legislature for enactment
into law, according to Commit
tee Chairman DeVere Taylor of
Medford.
Mr. Taylor explained that the
schedule would provide a floor
of $3,400 for teachers with less
than a bachelor's degree, $3,700
for those with the bachelor's de
gree, and $4,000 for those with
master's degree. He said it would
also provide regular annual in
crements for each year of exper
ience to certificated Oregon edu
cators. "Teacher turnover is
greatest and salaries lowest in
districts which do not provide
salary schedules," stated Chair
man Taylor. He further ex
plained that the purpose of the
committee in its action was to
promote efficiency in school dis
trict programs through reduc
tion of turnover.

Most Patients Want
To Know of Cancer
Chicago U.R) Most patients
would want to" be told if they
had cancer, a survey shows.
The study was conducted by
Dr. Otis Brown, of Bremen, Ind.,
who sent out 1,000 question
naires and got 477 replies.
His findings, reported in
Science Digest, showed that 96.6
per cent of all persons who re
plied said they would want to
know if they had cancer.
Brown said 99.1 per cent of
those between the ages of 18 and
35 wanted to know the truth,
compared to 92.5 per cent itoe
tween the ages of 66 and 90.
A slightly higher percentage
of men than women wanted to
know the truth.
Brown said patients who prob
ably should not be told the
truth are those too young to
understand, those mentally un
fit, those who previously have
said they would rather not be
told and a few of the very aged
with slowly growing malignancies.

If you'd like, to add a novel
touch to your traditional turkey
dinner, consider the relish tray!
Scoop out the centers of crisp
radishes, and stuff them with a
mixture of blue and cream
cheese. And here's a different
way to use the all-important
cranberry: open one No. 2 can
of sliced peaches and drain the
juice without removing the
peaches and drain the juice with
out removing the peaches. Soften
one envelope of unflavored gel
atin in Ji-cup cranberry-juice
cocktail. Heat; add another V2
cup of the cranberry juice, and
stir until the gelatin is dissolved.
Cool until thickened, pour into
the can of peaches, and chill un
til firm. Remove the mold from
the can and cut through in lay
ers; then cut layers in half to
serve with your turkey dinner
or as a garnish for a cold-turkey
platter.
