DISCHARGE FROM
THE NIPPLE
Many women worry about a
little discharge from one or both
nipples. Especially when this is
bloody, especially when it comes
from- only one breast, and es
pecially when the woman is over
45 or 50, this may mean trouble.
Always such a breast should im
mediately be examined. If no
nodule can be felt in the sub
stance of the breast, it is prob
able that there are tiny wart
like growths in some of the
ducts which pass through the
nipple.
Today, some physicians are
examining the discharge with
what is called the Papanicolaou
technique. The fluid is smeared
on a glass slide and immediately
stained and studied under the
microscope. An expert can recog
nize cells which have originated
in a cancerous growth. If no
such cells are found, the patient
can be reassured.
A good surgeon hates to re
move a woman's breast if he can'
possibly avoid it. Unfortunately,
one cannot very well remove
just the nipples because the
scar would dam up the scores
of milk-forming glands, and this
could lead to trouble. In those
cases in which the discharge ap
pears at the same time in both
nipples, the probability is that
the cause is not cancer. A cancer
is more,, likely to appear in one
breast at a time.
Goodness for Granted
For those many persons who
tend to worry themselves sick,
fearing that almost unwittingly
they have committed some
minor sin or other, I have what
is usually a helpful idea, and
that is, that most of us should
and must take our essential
goodness for granted. If we were
to stop and think for a moment
we would see that essentially
we were good, honest, kindly
people. Under such circum
stances it is silly to worry about
a possible pecadillo, or the idea
that perhaps we have committed
"the unpardonable sin," what
ever that is!

priests tell me how, finally,

judge yesterday awarded more
than $15,000 in retroactive
wages to some 300 Coos Bay
Lumber company workers.
The back wages are for the
period from Sept. 13, 1954 to
Jan. 1, 1955.
Federal Judge Edward P.
Murphy of San Francisco, who
heard the case on temporary as
signment here, made the ruling.
The employees returned to
work in September of 1954 after
a strike with an understanding
that they would be paid retro
actively any wage increase
granted by a governor's lumber
fact-finding board. But the com
pany claimed an oral agreement
between it and the CIO Wood
workers union local modified
the contract between the two.
The workers will get retroac
tive pay in varying amounts,
averaging about $50 each.

after repeatedly listening to
some worrisome woman who
kept returning to confess some
unimportant "sin" which she
wasn't even sure she had com
mitted, they had had to order
her to forget it, and to quit
coming back to talk about it.
They told her that they doubted
if the Good Lord ever concerned
Himself about such minor and
questionable sins. They doubted,
also, if a person who was so
concerned over so minor a sin
had good sense.
Many a time I have had to
point to a woman that, while
she was spending hours of time
worrying about a possible mis
take in caring for a child who
died, she was neglecting and
treating shabbily her "husband
and her remaining children.
She was giving the children her
hurtful idea that she loved only
the one who died. She had no
right in her grief to be so selfish
and so hurtful to others.
Often I have to point out to
such a woman that the Good
Lord does not demand of us that
we be prophetic and able to see
into the future. When a loved
one is very ill and dying all
that we need do is to get the
best medical help that we can
find. After the loved one is gone,
it is foolish and wrong to sit
brooding for months, wondering
if the patient could have been
saved if we had called another
physician or another suregon, or
rushed the invalid to a great
clinic.

looks completely the fact that
marriage is, or should be, a
partnership with both partners
having equal rights and respon

When there is a difference of
opinion on any subject, whether
it be money or sex, both part
ners should have their say and
a compromise be made when a
woman is "frigid''' in the sense
that love repulses her, and when
her husband would like sex to
play a normal part in his mar
riage, there is bound to be trou
ble. ' '
Only when both partners are
satisfied to have sex play only
a small role in their marriage
can their lives together be truly
happy. Should one partner feel
cheated, and it is generally the
husband who does so as men
rarely suffer from "frigidity,"
