Parenls Urged To
Get Salk Shots
For Children Soon
Washington (U.R) Surgeon
General Leonard A. Scheele ap
pealed to parents today to get
Salk shots for their children as
soon as possible to be sure they
are protected during the 1956
polio season.
If everyone waits until May,
he ' warned, . there will be a
"hopeless logjam." Inevitably,
he' said, some -children would
miss out at least temporarily.
Switch Rejected
Scheele made the plea after
a committee of the nation's lead
ing polio authorities unanimous
ly rejected a proposed switch
to a single-shot inoculation pro-gr-am
to stretch Salk supplies to
more children.
The experts, including Dr.
Jonas E. Salk, met all day Wed
nesday on the question. Scheele
announced they agreed to stick
to the present schedule which
calls for three injections over
an eight-month period.
The surgeon general said the
scientists decided there wasn't
enough evidence to be sure one
shot would suffice over a long
period. Salk called the decision
"splendid." He said it means we
will be able to give "the best
protection to the most suscep
tible children." This is the best
way to cut down on polio inci
dence, Salk said.
Production To Pick Up
Scheele said he expects vac
cine production to pick up this,
month and increase substantial
ly in January. On the other
hand, he said demand is not
great at present because people
are "thinking about Christmas
and not about polio."
Scheele reported that the ex
perts decided against the single
shot program because "it might
dilute the effect" of the vaccine
on polio prevention.
Basil O'Connor, president of
the National Foundation for In
fantile Paralysis, said the ex
perts made "a very sound deci
sion to continue the program as
it is presently operating."

Nine Ships Idled
In West Coast Ports
San Francisco (U.R) The
number of ships idled in West
Coast ports by a strike of AFL
Marine Firemen rose today to
nine.
Five of the ships were tied up
in San Francisco and four in Los
Angeles. It appeared likely that
a number of other ships would
be hit today elsewhere along the
coast.
The firemen said they will re
fuse to work until they get the
same vacation pay as that re:
cently granted to AFL Sailors
and Marine Cooks under a new
master contract covering 6,000
maritime workers.
If the firemen carry out their
threat, as many as 150 ships op
erated by member firms of the
Pacific Maritime Association will
be affected.
