First Job Q
How did you . land you? first
regular job? There wi nothing
unusual in my orisinel acquisi
tion or a regular py check. I
just answered an advertisement
and landed aob as freight no
tice messengeg for the Pennsyl
vania Railroad. Jimmy Durante
landed his first regular Job by
playing the "Wifd Cherries

time and shortly after became

Horses Women
"Cookery lasts, kissing
doesn't," observed Owen Mere
dith. He was far off the beam.
No smart girl will pay to much
attention to him. The ability to
cook and serve food well is a
fine thing for a woman to know,
however, it is not of major im
portance in making a marriage
a happy one. Kissing is. When
Jiandled by a clever woman the
thrill of a kiss can last to pass
the golden wedding day. The
woman who understands love
aliys has less touble holding
a husband than a brilliant cook.
Says She
"So the stargazers say Libra
women (September 22-October
22) have a sense of humor,"
writes a feminine subscriber.
"Senses of humor vary.o Any
thing that is subtle escapes a
Libra woman. To be funny to
her everything must ,be quite
obvious and the joke must be
on somebpdy else. A Libra can
not enjoy a joke on herself. Aft
er'all, isn't that the supreme test
as to the possession of a sense
of humor."

Irritations
Zippers that jam and type
writer ribbons hard to change
are still among the minor irrita
tions in my life. Every time I
mention- zippers that jam one
manufacturer suggests I change
to his product which he claims
is "jamless." He seems to be a
kindly fellow and I haven't the
heart to tell him that it is his
zippers that jam. And how!
Speaking of typewriter difficul
ties there was once on the mar
ket a machine called the Hall
Typewriter, which has no rib
bon. Wonder what became of
that remarkable machine?

TWINS AGAIN
Allegan, Mich. (U.P.) Mr. and
Mrs. LaFayette Stuch of nearby

prised when the new arrival
turned out to be a double fea

Four Months' Work
Needed for Tax Bill
Chicago (U.P.) The average
wage-earner works four months
out of the year just to square his
tax bill, the Western Tax Coun
cil reports.
The council said the average
earner today pays 34.4 per cent
of his income in taxes to sup
port federal, state, and local gov
ernments. Frank E. Packard, executive
vice-president of the council,
said the increasingly large bite
taken by taxes out of personal
income shows the need for a con
stitutional amendment limiting
federal income tax rates.
Packard reported ' that 30
state legislatures now have asked
Congress to submit such a consti
tutional amendment to the states
for ratification, and that only
twe more states must act to force
congressional action.
He said the Western Tax Coun
cil will start work "early in
1956 when many of the legisla
tures convene" to get the sup
port' of two additional states.'
Packard pointed out that "the
biggest slice" of taxes goes to
Washington.
"Under the 16th Amendment,
Washington can raise income
tax rates to 100 , per cent and
there would be no question of
legality," Packard said. "This
may be proper in wartime, but
in peacetime we need a consti
tutional ceiling on federal tax
rates."
Variable Rales for
Expressway Proposed
' Chicago (U.P.) Variable
rates like those in use for long
distance phone calls have been
recommended ,for a proposed
eastern expressway.
The proposal for the Delaware
expressway near Philadelphia
calls for lower charges on Sun
days and at nights to encourage
some drivers to travel during
other than rush hours.
. The American Society of Plan
ning officials called the proposal
noteworthy for two reasons:
1. It regards the toll chiefly as
a way to regulate the amount of
traffic and puts in second place
the concept of the toll as a way
to finance road-building.
2. It seeks to even out the
amount of driving done " on a
road by diverting some peak
hour traffic to those times when
fewer vehicles are in use.
The report issued by the Phil
adelphia Bureau of Municipal
Research and the Eastern Divi
sion of the Pennsylvania Econo
my League suggests varying
tolls according to the time of day,
day of the week and even the
season of the year.
It also suggests different prices
based on the number of passen
gers a car is carrying aimed at
making' it more expensive and
therefore less attractive to have
six cars with one passenger each
than one car with six passengers.

Siberia Said Site Of Soviet Explosion
Tokyo (U.R) The Japanese
government announced official
ly today that investigations re
vealed the recent Russian hydro
gen explosion took place in the
desolate Lake Baikal region of
Siberia.
The sprawling lake is located
in central Siberia just north of
the Outer Mongolian border.
Moscow Radio, in a broadcast

With all the big excitement of Buick's 1956 styling and
power and ride and handling it's easy to overlook
this fact:
Gas mileage in the '56 Buicks takes a big step upward.
One reason, of course, is the new power plant itself.
Every new Buick cradles an advanced 322-cubic-inch V8
engine with the highest horsepowers,. Series for Series, in
all Buick history. Yet every engine delivers more efficiency,
and more usable power to the rear wheels because each
one has a new double "Y" manifolding, and a new high in
compression ratio. ' '
But the major reason for the happy news in gas mileage
and for the new step-up in safety and thrills is Buick's latest
version of Variable Pitch Dynaflow.
In this airplane-principled transmission,- you always had a
gas-saving cruising range and, at a switch of the pitch, a
full-power getaway range.
Now Buick engineers have brought to this cruising range
what they call "double regeneration." It simply means a new '
way to make flowing oil add to its own velocity to build up
driving force.
Get 4-Seoson Comfort In your new Buick
with FRIGIDAIRE CONDITIONING
now at a new low price '
'o now, you merely nudge the pedal to part throttle and
new breakaway getaway. And since' you get this quicker,
safer response in your normal cruising range where you don't
use full power you get plenty more miles from every tankful
of gas. ,
But when you do need sudden safety-surge for emergencies,
you just floor the pedal to switch the pitch. Instantly, you're
at full-power acceleration and it's the most thrilling safety
measure in the land. '
How about coming in to try the most modern transmission yet?
The absolute smoothness of this new Dynaflow is worth' a
visit in itself. So you can be sure you're in for a wealth of
wonderful surprises-for that's just the start of the best Buick
yet. Can you make it this week?
New Advanced Variable Pitch Dynaflow is the only Dynaflow Buick
builds today. It is standard on Roadmaster, Super and Century optional .
at modest extra cost on the Special. Q
