TWO MEDFORD (OREGON)
IRL Studies
Africa at
Conference
"Africa in the Modern World"
was the general topic studied
during a regional international
relations conference Saturday at
Medford Senior High school.
Sponsored by the International
Relations league of the school,
the conference was attended by
six southern Oregon' student
delegations representing Jack
sonville, Grants Pass, Riddle,
Myrtle Creek, Klamath Falls
and Medfd.
J. Cdd Brown of the political
science department of the Uni
versity of Oregon and Dr. Clif
ford Miller of Southern Oregon
college's political science depart
ment were the experts who
spoke to the conference. Both
men hrve been students of Afri
can history and conditions and
have actually lived in Africa.
Mr. Brown was a foreign ser
vice staff oigcer for almost
seven yfs and rved as vice
consul and as acting consul at
Mombasa, Kenya protectorate,
British ast Africa, for two
year Mr. Miller taught school
in Nairobi, Kenya, for a num
ber of yt-s.
j Mr. Brown spoke specifically
on the colonialism, nationalism,
and imperialism impasse in
Black Africa. He reviewed the
many aspects of -the problem and
left the solutions to be found
by the discussion groups.
Dr. Miller talked more spe
cifically of the Mau-Mau prob
lem in Kenya, describing from
his personal o observation the
problem of "color" in Black
Africa. o
During the discussion periods
the students drew on their
source material for facts and at
tempted To find means of resolv
ing some of the controversies
which were apparent.
In the summary session stu
dents asked questions of both
Mr. Brown and Dr. Miller.
Luncheon was served in the
cafeteria during which plans
were made for the spring con
ventiSft of IRL on the Eugene
campus.

Family to Leave
For Island Stay;
Reunion is Held
Talent The departure soon of
the Rev. and Mrs. Morris L.
Nylander and children, Lenny
and Carla, for the Hawaiian
islands where the Rev. Mr. Ny
lander will do missionary work,
was the occasion of a family re
union last week.
I The Rev. Mr. Nylander until
recently was pastor of the Talent
Assembly of God church, which
he served for 15 months. He is a
Medford High school graduate
and also attended Talent schools.
The reunion was held at the
homes of a brother and sister
and their families, the Wallace
Nylanders, Minear road, and Mr.
and Mrs. Evan Rasmussen, route
3, box 224, Medford.
Other brothers and their fam
ilies here for the event were
Mr. and Mrs. Sylvan Nylander
and daughters, Sylvia and Mit
zie, Dodson, Mont., who plan to
leave for their home today; and
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Nylander
and son, Chipper, Van Nuys,
Calif.
The Wallace Nylanders chil
dren, Robin and Terry, and the
Rasmussen's son, Lorin, and
daughter, Linda, also attended
the reunion events which in
cluded family dinners.
The Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Ny
lander and family and Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Nylander and chil
dren, left Thursday for Cali
fornia. The pastor and his fam
ily will leave from there by
plane December 15 for Hawaii
to serve in the missionary field
for five years.
Gold Hill Lodge
Elects Officers
Gold Hill Mrs. Clarence
Parsley was elected noble grand
of Amethyst Rebekah lodge at
the last meeting.
Others elected to office were
Mrs. Lester Parker, vice-grand;
Mrs. Paul Thompson, recording
secretary; Mrs. Paul Molloy,
treasurer; and Mrs. Cecil John
son, financial secretary.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Clyde Kell, Mrs. Tom Smith
and Mrs. Jim Clement.
The lodge will meet again
Wednesday, December 7, at 8
p.m.

Dinner Announced
By Youth Group
Of Phoenix Church
Phoenix The youth group
of Phoenix Presbyterian church
has planned a progressive dinner
for Sunday, Dec. 11. The young
people will meet at the church
at 6:30 p.m. and from there will
go to the home of Miss Nancy
Stewart for the appetizer course.
The second course will be serv
ed in the home of Jim and Don
Korth, and at this time the devo
tions will be held. The third stop
will be at the home of Don Mac
Kintosh for the main course of
the dinner, and dessert will be
served at the home of Miss Chloe
Carson.
Attendance in this group has
been growing under the leader
ship of the pastor and his wife.
The prayer circle of the
church met last Wednesday mor
ning, with Mrs. C. A. Stothers
as leader.
Dancers to Hold
New Year Party
Two square dance clubs, the
Merry-Go-Rounders and the
Swingin' Bees have planned a
party to usher in the new year.
The event will be a smorgasbord
and square dance New Year's
eve at 840 South Riverside av
enue. Caller will be Mrs. Leslie Rob
ertson and dancing will begin
at 8:30 p.m. and last until mid
night. All square dancers are invited
to attend and reservations may
be made by calling Mrs. Johnnie
Johnston, 3-5892, or Mrs. Robert
son, 3-4264. ,
Lady Lions Plan
Dinner at Phoenix
Phoenix Phoenix Lady Lions
will meet Thursday, December
8, for a joint dinner and business
session at the Kachina room,
Oakwood motel. Dinner will be
served at 7:30 p.m.
A gift exchange will be held
and each woman attending is
asked to bring a gift costing no
more than 50 cents.
The committee in charge of
arrangements is Mesdames John
Cook, J. D. Walch and Norman
Williams.

Mrs. Reed 'McKay stated that
she had contacted Eagle Point
and Prospect schools concerning
the coming essay contest.
Articles on cancer were read
by Mrs. Grant Hubbel and an
article on "How to Display the
Flag" was read by Frances
Miller.

ments were served to the post
and guests by auxiliary mem
bers.

Medford Garden club held De
cember 1 at the Pythian hall.
Mrs. Ruby Rusque spoke on
"Holly at Christmas Why?"
Christmas music was furnished
by Mrs. William Kennerley and
Mrs. Ivan Burton, and a gift ex
change was held.
Prizes were won by Mrs. G.
A. Galbraith, Mrs. R. H. Peter
son and Mrs. W. C. Gannaway.

Using hot water to defrost the

but the experts say it is bad for
the box. The Alabama Extension
service says that hot water
causes pressure to be built up
in the evaporator and makes the
compressor difficult to start.
