So-Called 'Model
Home' Approach

The Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce today issued a cau
tion to local residents about busi
nesP firms using the so-called
"model home" approach in at
tempts to sell siding, insulation,
new roofs, or other similar
items.
Don McNeil, chamber man
ager, said that the chamber has
in recent years received com
plaints about some organizations
using this type of "sales pitch,"
as has the Portland Better Busi
ness Bureau.
There is nothing illegal about
the practice, McNeil said, but
he added that in the past, experi
ence with the "model home" ap
proach has been that the persbn
buying, in many instances, "could
have purchased the same mate
rial or service locally at about
half the cost.
He said the salesmen, usually
fromout of town, who use this
approach quote homeowners
"cut rates" for materials or ser
vices because the house was "se
ized as a model home."
McNeil added that residents
calling the chamber to inquire
about the reputation of firms
using such an approach should
obtain the name of the firm, the
name of the salesman and other
details before0 calling the cham
ber. If objectionable practices
are used, he said, the chamber
would also like to have written
complaints filed with it.
Skid on Ice Fatal
To Mitchell Motorist
Prineville (U.R) Henry Mat
thies, 26, Mitchell, Ore., died in
a hospital here last night of
i severe head injuries suffered
whenv his pickup truck struck
ice on Highway 26, yesterday a
few miles west of Mitchell.
State police said the pickup
left the highway, rolled down a
steep embankment to the old
highway and into a field. Mat
thies was taken to Pioneer Mem
orial hospital in Prineville and
died last night without regain
ing consciousness.
Another accident occurred a
few hours later in virtually the
same spot but the motorist. Mrs.
Ed East, was not hurt. Police
said glare ice on the highway
just east of the Ochoco summit
made the route virtually impassable.
