Washington U.R) Top Re
publicans agreed today that
"peace and prosperity" will be
their battle cry in next years
political campaign. Democrats
threatened to drown this out
with loud criticism of adminis
trationforeign policy.
House GOP leader Joseph W.
Martin Jr., who conferred with
President Eisenhower Saturday,
told reporters the "peace and
prosperity" issue would be push
ed hard by Republicans next
year.
Sen. Homer0Capehart (R.-Ind.)
agreed. "Of course we're going
to debate foreign policy," Cape
hart said. "But we must be fac
tual about it. Peace and prosper
ity is a good factual theme."

Long-Talking Record
Dartford, England (U.R) A
silver-tongued Irishman claims
to have set a new world's record
by talking 133 hours without a
stop.
Kevin Sheehan, a former Irish
Guards trooper, talked to crowds
in a local dance hall on subjects
ranging from sex to cricket.
Attended by a doctor, nurse
and voice coach, Sheehan talked
two hours longer than the pre
vious record of 131 hours
claimed by a Russian.
cans. He promised an open at
tack on the Eisenhower - Dulles
foreign policy if the GOP uses
the peace theme.
Democratic members of the
House Foreign Affairs commit
tee also served notice they will
criticize foreign policy. Reps.
Omar Burleson (D.-Tex.) and
Wayne L. Hays (D.-O.) said noth
ing makes the administration
immune from attack.
Mr. Eisenhower and Dulles
have pleaded that the overseas
program be kept out of politics.
Dulles said both parties should
at least refrain from "partisan
excesses." Since that time, how
ever, foreign policy has surged
forward until not it is about on
par with the farm situation as a
topic for political debate.
Sen. Joseph C. O'Mahoney (D.
Wyo.) said that in 1952 Repub
licans hurled "20 years of trea
son" charges at the Democrats.
He implied that the GOP can ex
pect retaliation next year.
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D.
Minn.) repeated the Republicans
should repent their 1952 attacks
on former President Truman
and his secretary of state, Dean
Acheson, if they want to take
foreign policy out of politics.
Martin said he is confident
the GOP will win in 1956, even
without Mr. Eisenhower on the
Paris Cily Council Eyes Parking Meiers
Paris (U.R) The Paris city
council was reported eyeing
American-style parking meters
today as possible answer to the
chronic traffic jams in the
French capital.
Former Police Chief Andre
Dubois silenced Paris automo
bile horns recently but the city
still is plagued with a tangle of
nerve-wracked swearing drivers
packed fender-to-fender on the
teeming boulevards.
City council sources said park
ing meters might cut down the
traffic problem by ending the
age-old practice of forcing motor
ists to drive endlessly around
the block looking for a place to
park.
ticket. - ,
He said he fully realizes, and
so does Mr. Eisenhower, that the
Republicans must come up next
year with legislation to "help
the small farmer." This is the
GOP's "biggest problem" he
said.
New York's Gov. Averell Har
r i m a n, potential Democratic
presidential candidate, told Ok
lahoma Democrats that "there
is no such thing as peaceful co
existence" with Russia.
"That is a Russian proposal
and it would be a mistake for us
to swallow it," Harriman said.
"They don't want war. They are
not foolish. A world war would
destroy Russia. But they want
to maintain a strong position
against us."
