try the spirits? By the word of God. We hear through the Medford
Ministerial round table discussion, some saying the word of God s
not inspired, some saying it doesn't mean what it says, some saying
it is optional whether you believe and obey it, and others saying, a
person can become a Christian and not know when the change took
place. Such statements as these are an insult to the name of Christian

Five-Day Mission
Being Conducted
At Friends Church
A five-day preaching mission
is being conducted at the Friends
church. The closing service will
be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The
speaker is Clark Smith, pastor
of the Spokane Friends church.
Music director for the mission
is Dean Gregory, Portland, gen
eral superintendent of Friends
churches in Oregon, Washington,
and Idaho, who has spoken at
Medford Friends church on a
number of occasions. He is a
tenor soloist and directs the con
gregational singing.
The meetings, which began
Wednesday, are being held each
evening this week at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday school classes will meet
in a group at the Friday service.
The public is invited.
Mr. Smith will speak at both
the 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. wor
ship services Sunday. Music will
be furnished by a women's trio
and young people's mixed quar
tet. A missionary emphasis will
be made in the Sunday school
and missionary offering taken.

Christmas carols. The first topic

have been planned by members
of Wesley foundation, a religious

announced this week. Today at

for needy Koreans. A bowling

hear one of the five general su
perintendents in their church
when Dr. Hardy C. Powers
speaks in the morning worship
service next Sunday. He will be
accompanied by the Oregon-Pacific
district superintendent, the
Rev. W. D. McGraw Jr., who
will address the adult Sunday
school department" at 9:45 a.m.
Dr. Powers has for 12 years
been one of the officials making
up the board of general super
intendents for the denomination.
He is a. world traveler and had
under his supervision mission
ary work in various parts of the
world. The Church of the Naz
arene conducts missionary work
in 26 countries.
A series of sermons was be
gun last Sunday night in the
church that explains the mean
ing in the names which the
Prophet Isaiah gave to Jesus in
the prophecy about his birth as
recorded in Isaiah in the 9th
chapter, Verse 6.
Next Sunday the sermon sub
ject will be on the phrase,
quoted from Isaiah, "The Mighty
God." Also on Sunday a series
will begin for the Junior High
school group of the church. The
topic will be, "You and -Your
Church." This is a part of a pre
Christmas series leading up to
membership in the church on
Christmas Sunday, Dec. 25. The
Christmas Sunday school pro
gram and worship will be com
bined. The church choir will
present a cantata, "The Holy
Advent," that Sunday evening
at a vesper service.

Jewish, Christian Ideas

and compared by Rabbi J. Nodel
of Temple Beth Israel in Port
land, at Southern Oregon col
lege Wednesday.
Rabbi Nodel said he believed
in avoiding controversial discus
sions, but added he could not
speak in a vacuum and that due
to religious differences in assem
blies it was almost impossible to
do so.
Basic Differences
His interpretation of basic dif
ferences between Jew and Chris
tian, in their beliefs, concerned
varying degrees of preoccupa
tion with the hereafter exhibited
by both. He pointed out it was
not until comparatively recent
ly that Christians . have- tended
to draw away from the concept
that life was in itself only a
preparation for death and that
in adversity the tendency has
been for the Christian to comfort
himself with the thoughts of a
better life in the hereafter when
he was confronted with a series
of calamities in the present.
In contrast, Rabbi Nodel aver
red that the Jewish interpreta
tion always has been a concern
with the present.' He pointed out
that a Jew was much more con
cerned with making a better
world while it is "yet day" and
that "the whole is greater than
the sum of its parts in that we,
as Jews, believe in the better
ment of the group rather than
the individual."
Mora Social Religion
Rabbi Nodel advanced his be
lief that Christianity is begin
ning to preach a more social re
ligion, and that it is rediscover
ing itself and returning more and
more to fundamental tenets of
Judaism and the Old Testament
from which the Christian relig
ion draws its source and inspira
tion.

true, he pointed out that there
