Kay Boyles Denies
Red Party Link
Washington (U.R) Novel
ist Kay Boyle swore yesterday
that she never has been a mem
ber of the Communist party.
She testified that in 1949 she
j sent contributions to two con
j f erences which Senate investiga-
tors said were sponsored by
! groups on the attorney general's
I list of subversive organizations.
However, she said she never be
longed to the two groups.
The prize-winning writer ap
peared before the Senate Consti
tutional Rights Subcommittee in
defense of her husband, Joseph
M. Franckenstein, who was fired
by the State Department as a
security risk.
One of the charges against
Franckenstein was that Miss
Boyle was a Communist from
1940 to 1944.
