Scientists Make No Assertions
On Virus of Hodgkins1 Disease
BY DELOS SMITH
United Press Science Editor
New York (U.R) Discovers
of new viruses rarely can pro
duce pictures or any other evid
ence you can hold in your hands.
So. Drs. Warren L. Bostick and
Lavell Hanna are at pains to
make no flat assertions in re
vealing their capture of a virus
which seems new and also seems
to have a hand in mysterious,
incurable, and always fatal
Hodgkins disease.
The evidence was impressive
enough to cause a well-known
medical specialist consulted by
the writer to study it and then
pronounce it the most hopeful
"avenue" for the eventual con
quest of an incurable disease he
had ever seen. But if there is
a "cure" at the end of the
"avenue," it will take a long
time to reach it.
Hodgkins disease causes an
unstoppable and progressive en
largement of the nodes of the
body s lymphatic system. It is
cancer-like and some authorities
consider it a form of cancer.
But it has always suggested, too,
the sickening processes of an
"infactive agent," that is, a bac
terium or a virus.
Unusual Chemical Properties
Science knows definitely that
the "infectious agent" if there
is one cannot be bacteria. That
leaves the possibility of a virus,
but if a virus, it would have to
be one which is invisible under

What is your opinion?" R.G.
(A) As things now stand, I
question very much whether
this boy will make you happy in
even the most powerful micro
scope and also one possessed of
unusual chemical properities.
There is not the slightest evid
ence of Hodgkins' disease ever
having been transmitted from
one human being to another.
At the University of California
School of Medicine in San Fran
cisco, Drs. Bostick and Hanna
took lymph nodes from patients
vith the disease, ground them
up, injected the material into
fertile chicken eggs. After a
few days, they took material
from those eggs and injected
it into more eggs. This they did
as many as ten times, because
chick embryos nurture viruses
and presumably viruses are
multiplied by this "serial pas
sage." New-Born Mice
From the last eggs in the
series, they took material and
injected it into the brains of
new born mice. After allowing
for more virus-incubation, they
ground up the brains and in
jected the material in the brains
of more new-born mice. After
repeating this through five to
seven sets of mice, the material
developed the power to sicken
and kill mice.
Keep in mind that the egg
embryos and the mouse brains
showed no detectable sign of
harboring virus until the last
mouse - brains developed the
power to kill. Also keep in mind
that the scientists repeated the
whole procedure with lymph
node material taken from heal
thy human beings, and failed
to produce disease.
Also they took every precau
tion to eliminate the possibility
of "picking up" some latent
virus of mice. So it seemed clear
they had a new virus which
causes in mice a fatal disease
with some resemblance to Hodg
kins' disease. But whether it is
the "causative agent" of Hodg
kins' disease in human being
remains to be proven and it is
going to be difficult to do, they
said in the technical journal,
"Cancer Research."

the future. If that is true, then
you will do well to see other
boys and not limit yourself to
him. I'm sure he has dates with
other girls while he is away at
college and you should have
dates with other young men.
This boy's school success has
gone to his head and has affected
his whole concept of himself. If
he has four years of success in
college, on top of his high school
successes, he may be so utterly
spoiled by it that he would be
impossible to live with. He, ob-1
viously, is one of the people
who cannot take success without
having it go to his head.
Then, too, you must take into
consideration the possibility that
he will feel superior to you be
cause he has gone to college and
you have not. This may be par
tially back of his critical attitude
and demanding way. Certainly
you do not want to spend the
rest of your life with a man who
regards you as his inferior.

London Relaxes Drink
Ruling for Russians
London (U.R) London re
laxed its strict liquor regula
tions Sunday night to permit a
group of Soviet diplomats and
ballet dancers to drink and make
merry in a restaurant until mid
night. The rarity of the drinking con
cession on a Sunday night cost
cafe owner Norman Isow $14
because he bet his father the
authorities wouldn't allow it.
"We tried to get such a license
once for a party of Americans
but failed," he said.
The party was a "sensational
success," Isow said. "To see what
the Russians can eat and drink is
unbelievable. They could drink
a brewery dry."

Don't letitallsffp.
through your fingers!,
A message of importance for you
IF you're an average American, chances are that even with the
present cost of living, you're making more money than you
ever did before in your life.
That's wonderful. But if you're wise, you'll handle that in
come with care !
Treasury Secretary Humphrey said (on June 24, 1955),
"We believe at this time of great prosperity that all. of us
Government, business, and individuals alike should exercise
self-restraint in the use of public and private credit and the ac
cumulation of debt."
It's easy and human to get "money-happy" when there's
plenty coming in. To spend just a little more freely than you
should, to get just a little more deeply in debt than is prudent.
Actually, now is an ideal opportunity to save!
Now, while your real income is high, you can lay the foundation
of your security through sensible saving and wise investment.
As little as $18.75 a month invested in U. S. Savings Bonds,
will give you a cash backlog of $1,182.60 in just 5 years. If you '
can, and will, save as much as $75.00 a month, for 19 years
and 8 months, you will have a total, including interest, of.
$31,784.00. Which gives you a guaranteed monthly income of
$134.68 for 19 years and 8 months more.
Your savings are safe in Savings Bonds. Your principal is
secure against market fluctuations., And you're guaranteed an
average interest of 3 per year, compounded semiannually,
when Bonds are held to maturity.
You can invest in Bonds easily where you bank or through
the Payroll Savings Plan where you work. But start nowl Every
day you wait costs you money you can never get back!
Now is the time to buy wisely, save sensibly, and
invest safely in U. S. Savings Bonds!
