religious leaders ha- appealed
personally to Secrary of Agri
culture Ezra T. Benson to re
lease more of ,rie government'3
horde of surpus foods for relief
snipment3 yto Hungry families
overseas. '
Benson promised church
spokesmen at an unpublicized
meeting here earlies this month
that he would take a "good, hard
look" at their request. An Agri
culture Department spokesman
said today it is "still under
study." He said it may be neces
sary to ask Congress for special
legislation.
Congress authorized Benson
last year to give away some sur
plus farm commodities for dis
tribution abroad by private re
lief agencies. But Agriculture
Department attorneys have in
terpreted this law to mean that
free allocations can be made
only when products are in dan
ger of spoiling in storage. Under
this Interpretation, the only
types of food released so far
have been dairy products
dried milk, butter, and "cheese,
and cottonseed oil.
About S50,000,000 worth of
these foods have been distribut
ed to the needy in 20 countries
this year by Such organizations
as Church World Service, Catho
lic War Relief services, the
American Friends Service Com
mittee, the American-Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee,
and CARE.
Harriman Gets Political Sacking
Of Immigration Act Co-Sponsor
Friday, November 25, 1955
MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN
Washington U.R) New
York Gov. Averell Harriman
today gained a congressional
supporter in his expected bid
for the Democratic presidential
nomination.
Rep. Francis E. Walter (D-
Pa.), who broke with Adlai E.
Stevenson in the 1952 campaign
over the McCarran-Walter Im
migration Act, announced his
suDDort for Harriman. Walter
said he expects to go to the
Democratic national convention
next August as a "Harriman
delegate."
Walter, chairman of the
House Un-American Activities
Committee, said Harriman "is
the only candidate" for the
Democratic nomination who
"has true appreciation of the
No. 1 problem confronting the
nation today the threat to
our security posed by the Rus
sians who are intent on world
domination."
Walter broke with Stevenson
in 1952 when the former Illinois
governor criticized and called
for liberalizing the immigration
act which Walter sponsored with
the late Sen. Pat McCarran (D
Nev.). When Stevenson announced
his candidacy for the Demo
cratic nomination again next
year, Walter denounced him as
"the laughing boy of American
politics."
He said it was "inconceiv
able" the Democrats would
choose Stevenson, considering
the number of "outstanding
Americans" available.
In other political develop
ments Democrats continued
their sharp blasts at the admini
stration's farm program and the
defunct Dixon-Yates power con
tract.

cratic National Committee came

Murder Rules Out
In Death of Three
Powell River, B. C. (U.R)
An autopsy has ruled out the
possibility of murder in the
deaths of a Portland logger and
two other lumber workers 30
miles north of here last Thurs
day. The Royal Canadian Mounted
Police said Charles Haines, 34,
Portland; Fred Jennings, 40,
Vancouver, B. C, and Uno Ny
lund, 55, Courtenay, B. C, died
of drowning during a raging
storm. .
The loggers drowned in Gal
ley Bay, 30 miles north of Powell
River, while rowing their boat
across a 40-yard stretch of wa
ter. They were employees of the
Glen Levitt Logging Co. and
were rowing their boat from
a logging company dininghouse
on a float in the bay to. their
bunkhouse on another float.
The bodies of Haines and Jen
nings were recovered and an au
topsy ordered after an unidenti
fied ,man told mounted police
that he thought he "might have"
murdered the trio.
not less than 90 per cent of
parity. They accused the admini
stration's flexible farm support
policy of bringing farmers to
the, "verge of bankruptcy."
Chairman Paul Butler of the
Democratic National Commit- j
tee called on the administration
to pro'secute any officials re
sponsible for possible law viola
tions in the Dixon-Yates con
tract. Butler said in a statement
that action to prosecute 'now
admitted wrongdoing" in the
Dixon-Yates contract will be the
"real test" of GOP promises to
deal vigorously with any mis
conduct in government.
