Paris Gas Lighfs
Controversy Settled
Paris (U.Rj A years-long
controversy between city author
ities and traditionalists over the
gas lights along the famed
Champs Elysees was settled by
' compromise today.
For years, city authorities
have been demanding that the
gas lamps be replaced by mod
ern electric devices. Equally
loud have been the demands by
the lovers of old Paris that the
gas lamps must stay.
Under the compromise, the
Champs-Elysees will get the lat
est streamlined fluorescent illu
mination. At the same time, the
old gas lights were classified as
historical monuments and must
not be moved.

United Air Lilies Hostess Killed Aboard Plane by Thwarted Lover
Seattle
OI.R) An unfin-
ished love letter found in the j
pages of a book "How To Sell
Yourself" today told why a
spurned suitor shot and killed a
United Air Line hostess and then
took his own life.
"Dear Sally You're probably
right. I'm not the man for you"
the letter read in part.
It was found in the luggage
of Robert D. Clendenin, 26, a
New York brokerage worker,
who killed stewardess Sally
Shedd, 25, Seattle, before 40
horrified passengers aboard the
plane.
Clendenin later took his own
life.
Miss Miriam K. Garland, an
other stewardess on the plane,
told of the details of the shoot
ing which climaxed a tempestu
ous romance.
Miss Garland said she was
shocked when she saw Clen
denin stride up the gangway
Monday.
"I keep feeling that I could
have prevented it if I just had
shoved her off the plane the min
ute I saw him," she said.
Spoke a Few Words
"I thought he was going to
plead with her again," she said.
"They spoke a few words. Then
he grabbed her roughly and
pulled her back as though he
was going to pull her off the
plane.
"He then pulled her down into
a seat, when I saw a gun in his
hand ... I was standing about
four feet away. He had an ugly
look on his face and seemed in
a terrible rage.
"He fired three shots at her in
rapid succession. He then ran to
the doorway looking at us and
covering us. I moved to follow
and he turned at the door and
said 'don't follow and keep
away'.
"Then he started down the
stairs and the Air Force lieuten
ant ran out and threw him down
the stairs."
The lieutenant was Norman
Sout of Portland, Ore. Clendenin
ran about 25 paces and fired a
shot into his neck. He ran an
other 25 paces behind a tractor
and fired a second bullet into
his head.
Miss Shedd was pronounced
dead on arrival at Renton Hos
pital. Clendenin died about three
hours and 20 minutes later.
Met at Wedding ,
According to Miss Garland,
Miss Shedd and Clendenin met
at the wedding of another stew
ardess a year ago in New York.
In September she joined him in
New York.
She said Miss Shedd later tried
to break off the romance by
letter and telephone, and the
pair met in Chicago Nov. 14 to
talk things over.
She said Clendenin at that
time showed Miss Shedd a gun.
Miss Shedd and Miss Garland
stayed together Sunday night
and both thought Clendenin had
gone back to New York.
Clendenin was the son of Bev
erly Clendenin, a Salt Lake City
attorney.
Miss Shedd was the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Shedd
of San Francisco.
