Second Meeting To Discuss
Loop Team For Medford

Scheduled For Next Week
A second meeting to discuss same method was mentioned in
a possible Medford entry in the
Class B professional Northwest
Baseball league will be held
next Monday evening, Nov. 23
at 8 o'clock in the Pioneer
room of the Jackson hotel
Groundwork for the session
was laid last night at a meeting
of some 12 men interested in
seeing Dro ball return to the
community.
Medford recently received an
invitation from O. E. (Babe)
Hollingberry, retiring president
of the Northwest loop, to join
the circuit. The new president.
Jim Fleishman, has said he will
work to set Medford into the
league.
Those attending last night's
meeting will contact various in-
dustries of the county and urge
them to be represented at the
.Tarkson hotel Monday. Class B
league operation and its bene
fits to the valley will be outlined
and proposals for backing
Medford team will -be present
ed. It is probable that a partner
ship plan for financing and un
derwriting expenditures for
club will be explained.
NWL Men May Come
It is planned to have repre
sentatives of the league and
teams of the NWL here from
Eugene and Salem to give an
accurate picture of club opera
tion and to tell how cities in the
loop have financed their teams
They would answer questions
on club and league problems
Information obtained from
the league and reported at last
right's session by Bill Askwith,
Central Point, indicated that
Class B club could function for
a season with a working capital
of as low as S53,800. It was
brought out that the local situa
tion might alter this figure to a
higher amount.
Not included in the sum were
the repairs, renovations and ad
ditions that may be deemed
necessary to the fairgrounds ball
park for pro ball. An architect
Is expected to inspect the park
layout this week and to report
Monday on what should and can
be done. Several suggestions for
Improving the park and adding
seating were made last night.
Hale Greenman, Medford, re
ported on the Eugene plan for
backing Its pro club. There the
baseball venture is underwrit
ten by a number of men. They
guarantee losses if any. The

Harry Chipman, Medford,
served as temporary chairman
for the meeting last night at tbe
Holland hotel.
Northwest league baseball in
Medford would mean a much
faster brand of the game than

years from 1948 through 1951
when the Far West league was
in operation. The NWL as Class
B is two grades above the Class
D of the former Far West cir
cuit.
The meeting next Monday
will be open to all persons interested.

Dick James Wins
Hoffman Award
Eugene U.R) Dick James
was named last night as winner
of the Hoffman award for the
most valuable player on the
1955 Oregon football team and
Phil McHugh was selected cap
tain for 1956.
James, senior halfback from
Grants Pass, is the 14th winner
of the annual award which last
year went to George Shaw.
James wil play in ,the East-West
Shrine game.

Al Kircher Fired As Head
Coach At Washington State
Pullman, Wash. (U.R) Alton
S. (Al) Kircher, Washington
State College football coach, was
fired last night after his Cougars
finished the 1955 campaign with
a sorry 1-7-2 record.
C. Clement French, college
president, said the college would
buy up the one year remaining
on Kircher's five-year contract.
The contract called for an an
nual salary of $12,500.
Kircher, a letterman in three
sports at Michigan State, came
to WSC in 1950 as an assistant
to Coach Forest Evashevski and
was promoted to head coach
when Evashevski left for Iowa at
the end of the 1951 season.
Worst in History
A great 1952 season was pre
dicted for the 1952 campaign but
the Cougars won but 4 and lost
6. This year's mark of 1 win in
10 starts was the worst in WSC
history. Kircher's f our-y ear
mark at WSC was 13 victories,
25 losses and 2 ties. -
Alumni had been howling for
Kircher's scalp ever since the
Cougars lost to UCLA 55-0,
worst defeat of a WSC team
since 1922. Kircher was also
hanged in effigy once during the
season.
Also affected by the announce
ment were assistants Mike
Scarry, line coach, and Dale Gen
fry, end coach, both hired on a
year-to-year basis. Freshman
Coach Dan Stevly was not ef
fected.
French said his decision to
buy up Kircher's contract was
made "following a recommenda
tion from Stan Bates, director
of intercollegiate athletics, on
the basis of what's best for the
Washington State athletic pro
gram." Bates said nothing bad been
done about replacing Kircher.
"We are in no great hurry," he
said. "We want to make sure the
man we hire will fit into the
athletic picture at WSC."
NBA Season May
Be High Scoring
New York (U.R) The present
National Basketball association
season promises to be the highest
scoring in history, and the rise
is directly traceable to free
throw shooting.
The NBA reported today that
in 27 games played so far in the
young season, teams have scored
an average of 96.6 points per
game compared to an average
of 92.6 at the same- time last
year. The difference can be
quickly found in the free throw
department, where the average
has jumped from 26.9 per game
to 30.7.
The scoring splurge has seen
at least one team go over the
100 mark in 16 of the 27 games.
Five times both teams did it,
with St. Louis turning in the sea
son high of 121 points against
New York on Nov. 15.

son given was so that the tour
