Donor of Pipe Gift
Learns of It's True Value
Cousin Lem is a pipe en
thusiast with a collection that
ranges from Kaywoodies to
Turkish hookahs, but I felt sure
that he didn't have an atrocity
such as the one that confronted
me.
It was one of those big Ger
man things that holds about a
quarter of a pound of tobacco
with a downward curving stem
long enough so the porcelain
bowl would rest comfortably on
an alderman's alderman. The
bowl, adorned with bright
painted flowers, grapes and
cherubs, had a picture of the
Kaiser as its central ornament.
It didn't look too much like him,
but from what I could make out
of the inscription, I was sure it
was he, probably as a young
man.
The thing was priced at a dol
lar, so I asked for a closer look.
The bowl had a cover that ap
parently was gold-plated. An
other gold-plated band covered
the joint of stem and bowl, and
the mouthpiece was of such a
clear, amber-like substance that
I thought it must be a piece of
plastic added fairly recently.
COMFORT OF ANTIQUE SOFA
The low voltage atmosphere
when I arrived for dinner made
it obvious the Nelsons had been
having a tiff.
"He's just been telling me I'm
beautiful but dumb," said Jane.
"I know I shouldn't labor the
obvious," replied Fred, "but who
could blame me. Look there,"
and he gestured towards the
living room in the middle of
which I saw what seemed like a
gigantic, tapestry covered cam
embert cheese box with a post
rising out of it.
"I told her to go ahead and
buy a sofa. She's been wanting
one and so have I. A man needs
a place to stretch out on after
dinner, but who could stretch
out on that?"
It's a delicate matter taking
sides in even the most minor
disagreements between husband
and wife, but I never let that
interfere with my function as
the collector-critic.
In this case I boldly compli
mented Fred on having the
acumen and good luck to pick

It isn't too late yet for the
Mint to take a tip from Walt
Disney and make a few bucks
out of Davy Crockett.
Quite aside from the take the
Treasury got in income tax from
the coonskin hat sales, it seems
a matter, of simple justice that
the federals should get even
ftiore.
The reason is the Mint can
really peg down credit for dis
covering the coonskin hat craze
if it wants to do so.
Proof lies in the records of
half - dollar commemoratives
which obviously could be sold
at an even greater profit.
Back in 1921, the Mint brought
out two types of a Missouri
centennary half dollar with a
frontiersman in a coonskin cap
on the obverse side. Today those
coins catalogue at $40 and $45.
In 1925, it tried it again with
the Fort Vancouver Centennial
issue bearing a San Francisco
mint mark. On the reverse, the
coin carries a mountain man,
rifle at the ready, peering out
from under the typical coonskin
headgear. The coin today is
listed at $28.50.
After a lapse of nine years,
the Mint tried it once more, this

I put it in my mouth and drew
through it. Everything was in
good working order, so I paid the
dollar, plus another 50 cents to
have it sent to Lem along with a
short note thanking him for
putting me up on a recent visit
and wishing him a happy hour
with the Dresden memento of
Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Within a week, back came a
letter.
"It's Meissen, the finest porce
lain," he said, "and shouldn't
be called Dresden. Furthermore,
the picture is of Kaiser Wilhelm
I who beat the French in 18(0
"Since you were ignorant of
these simple facts, I guess you
probably didn't know that the
cover and band are gold 16
carat and that the mouthpiece
is genuine amber.
"I'm positive you didn't, be
cause you simply would not have
sent me something as a bread
and butter gift that would be
worth around $75, which is a
conservative valuation for the
pipe."
Lem's reasoning was absolute
ly correct. If I had known its
worth, I would have kept it for
myself.
DERIVED FROM ITS VALUE
'out a -woman who could find
such a bargain. For it was a bar
gain. Though the tapestry was
worn here and there, it was "not
sufficiently so that Jane could
not easily repair it. In addition,
the framework was solid.
Anyway you looked at it, it
was a lot of sofa for $25. The
over-all diameter of the Victor
ian piece was just under four
feet. The seat was 18 inches from
the floor and the central post
rose 19 inches above that.
"I think it's perfectly lovely,"
said Jane. "There's no one else
around who's got one, and it
seats -lots of people. But, of
course, if you really want me to
get rid of it, Fred, I'll do so. As
a matter of fact, Mrs. Tompkins
has already offered me $75 for it,
and I've seen them advertised
for $100 and more."
Fred looked up. "Seventy-five?
You'd better keep it awhile."
That was six months ago, and
today I'm positive Fred wouldn't
part with it for three times that
amount.
DAVY CROCKETT COIN?

Bicentennary. The piece, which
shows the famous coonskin-hat-ted
Indian fighter negotiating
with a Shawnee chief, proved
such a success it was brought out
each year through 1938.
And the Mint wasn't content
with just bringing out one such
coin each year. Finding it so
successful, they brought out the
Daniel Boone item in sets of two
or three struck off at different
mints.
Furthermore, their value to
day is even greater than the
earlier ones named above. A
pair of 1935 date, with Denver
and San Francisco mint marks,
list at $95. A set of three, 1937,
two with the D and S and the
third without a mint mark since
it was struck at Philadelphia,
catalogue at $90. A set of three
for 1938 list at $125.
The inference in this pre-Dis-
ney record is obvious. If even
now the government were to
bring out aDavy Crockett half
dollar, its sale would make
something of a dent in the na
tional debt that is still in the
hundreds of billions.

one of the more beautiful en
trants to the local glamour mar

S. under a contract with Warner
Bros, she was alarmed to dis
cover how American movie
goers regard the Italian cinema
beauties. A worse blow was to
hear that Anthony Quinn, her
co-star in "Ulysses," recently de
clared Rome stars were more
concerned with chest measure
ments than acting.
"The bosoms in Italy were
there years ago," sputtered the
?ndignant actress in her halting
English. "Now the public is tired
of this.
"Now is the time of Grace Kel
ly and Audrey Hepburn, not of
Monroe or Gina. The public must
understand now actresses are dif
renent in Italy. They have
changed.
"They want to be actresses.

Rosana has been a top thespian
in Italy for five years, appearing
in several films with her hand
some husband, actor Marco Vic
caro. Last year Warners combed
the world for a beauty to portray
Helen of Troy. Rosana won the
coveted role of the face that
launched a thousand ships and
the soon-to-be released "Helen
of Troy" was filmed in Italy.
In the picture you'll see Ros
ana as a siren with long blonde
hair who whispers sweet noth
ings to Paris Jacque Sernas in
perfect English. But in real life
she is a surprisingly sweet-faced
girl who wears no make-up and
has short, brown hair. The movie
voice, she explained, was
dubbed.
Furthermore, local bachelors
had to retire to the background,
for "Helen" arrived in Holly
wood with husband Vicaro and
their two-year-old son.
"They make me blonde be
cause Helen was blonde, but I
did not like the wig too much
hair," she sighed. "Now the
studio darken my hair because I
am a Cuban person in my first
picture here, "Santiago."

City Dwellers Find .

Los Angeles (U.R) If you
are a city dweller and have the
feeling that things are getting
more crowded all the time,
you're absolutely right, accord
ing to a statistical-mmded geo
grapher at the University of
California here.
Dr. Howard J. Nelson has re
ported that 99,000,000 persons
out of the estimated 165,000,000
persons in the U. S. now live on
only one per cent of the nation's
land.
While the living conditions he
outlined look uncomfortable,
Nelson brought out that property
owners should be happy with the
crowded state of affairs since
that one per cent of land is worth
more than all the 99 per cent
non-urban land left over.
- Other points about American
cities, Nelson reported, included
the facts that about one-third of
the 107 cities having a popula
tion of more than 100,000 were
founded in pre-Revolutionary
days, and that only two such
cities Tulsa, Okla., and Gary,
Ind., were founded in the 20th
century.

Conscience A Necessary
Brake On Person's Behavior
A person's conscience is not
some mysterious quality within
him. Instead, it is his moral
sense, his code
of right and
wrong, which
he uses to
guide his ac
tions. A man does
n't inherit con
science. He
learns moral
standards as
he goes

through life, partly from home,
partly from school, partly from
religious training. He also learns
from experience what people
consider right and wrong.
A conscience is invaluable.
Without it, a person wouldn't
have a brake on his behavior,
even if the behavior were in di
rect contradiction to what socie
ty considers right.
Once a person's code of con
duct has been learned and his
standards clearly determined, he
is able to tell, almost automati
cally, whether he is on the right
track when he considers doing
something. A "voice of con
science" tells him when he is
doing, or contemplating, wrong
action.
If everyone had a well-defined
code of behavior, we would
have no criminals and no of
fenders. However, many people
grow up with a confused code of
standards and as a result their
consciences are likewise con
fused. Instead of being re
strained by a "voice of con
science" they fail to get warn
ings because their code of morals
is too weak.
Code of Standards
On the other hand, there are
people who "should know bet
ter" because their training has
given them a good code of stand
ards. Yet their actions are those
of a person who seems to have
no conscience at all. Actually
they do not heed the warning
voice of conscience because they
prefer to do something in direct
contradiction to what they know
is right.
However, the matter does not
rest there. The "voice of con
science" 'is not stilled just be
cause the person has failed to
heed its warning. Instead, it acts
as a reproach, telling him how
wrong his behavior was, how
ashamed he should be,' and mak
ing him feel guilty for doing
things he knew were wrong.

love in the sense of forgetting
the loved one or the happy times
with the loved one. However,
people are capable of loving
more than one person, even
though their love may be of a
different type for different peo
ple. Therefore, it is possible to
fall in love again, even though
the second love may not be as
strong as the first love and even
though it may be of an entirely
different sort.
Good son-in-law: "My husband
has been a very good son-in-law
ever since we were married.
But, my mother has been very
critical of him and is getting
worse as she grows older.
I feel sorry for my husband and
want to know what I can do to
make my mother appreciate

BLM Sells Two Tracts
Of Timber Thursday
In an oral auction sale held by
the bureau of land management
here Thursday, two tracts of
timber totalling' an estimated
7,114.000 board feet were pur
chased for 5252,096.85.
Bate Lumber company of Mer
lin, with an offer of S138,673 85,
was the highest of the five bid
ders who participated in the
first scale. That tract, which con
tains an estimated 3,818.000
board feet, is located near Wil
derville in Josephine county. The
bid price for douglas fir, the ma
jor species, in the tract was
S36.75 per thousand board feet.
In the second sale, Fir Milling
and Planing company of Ash
land was successful bidder for
a tract containing an estimated
3,296,000 board feet of mixed
pine and fir species located near
Buck Lake in Klamath county.
Three other bidders participated
in the sale. Prices offered by Fir
Milling and Planning Company in
their final bid included S38 per
thousand for dougles fir, $50 for
ponderosa pine, $51 for sugar
pine, and $58 for white pine. The
total bid was $113,423.00.
Automobile Exhaust
Major Cause of Smog

bile exhaust appears to be the
major cause of smog in the Los
Angeles area, an air pollution
control expert told the Midwest
ern Air Pollution Prevention as
sociation. W. L. Faith, deputy director
and chief engineer for the South
ern California Air Pollution
foundation, said there is evi
dence "that automobile exhaust
is the No. 1 culprit in our atmos
phere. .
Faith said that when evidence
first was uncovered that hydro
carbons might be responsible for
the eye-stinging smog, control
measures were taken and hydro
carbon emissions .from oil refin
eries were reduced.
"But later," he added, "it was
found that even larger amounts
of hydrocarbons were emitted
in automobile exhaust." .

the first Christmas cards carried
these messages: "And many
sweet re
turns." "Here's
Christmas
come again!"
"Be privileged
to see." And
"To my friend."
But who
started the
business of
sending greet
ings to friends
on Christmas?
Nobody knows
Herman Nicholz
for sure, but it's likely it was an
English shop-keeper named Hen
ry Cole.
Way back in 1843, Cole com
missioned a Royal Academy
artist, John Colcott Horsley, to
design some cards of greeting
suitable for the Christmas sea
son. Horsley's design showed a
Victorian family gathered at the
feed board and added a few
words of sentiment about giving
to the . have-nots on the day of
Christ's birth.
Cole's printer struck off a
thousand copies and Cole sent
a few to his friends and offered
the rest for sale in his shop. They
are the earliest examples of the
now-familiar Christmas card that
have come to light.
Some of Cole's cards are in
cluded in a vast Hallmark collec
tion of relics in the card business,
displayed at the Washington Post
and Times-Herald book fair go
ing on here.
The idea of folding cards is
not new. Back in the 1870s there
was an unusual card about Robin
Hood and his "quest for a yule
tide dinner." The card was fold
ed into four sections and during
the unfolding a story" was told
with the third section showing
the dinner being served and the
last showing the diners dancing
in glee after a full meal.
The cards for this yule season
don't go too far afield from the
originals. Both contemporary
and modern art are prominent,
but the emphasis seems to lean
to the real, story of Christmas.

Scenes
We still find snow scenes, like
we do in the "over the hills and
through the ' woods to grand
mother's house we go" cards that
have been coming out for many
years. 1
Santa still is in evidence in
many of the cheaper cards- and
in some of the more expensive
ones. . '
Birds, though, seem to be dis
appearing. Half a century ago
they were much in evidence.
Gone also are the silky borders
of fringe, the lace panels and the
gold edging that added up to
elegance in, the old-time cards.
Emphasis this year is mostly
where it should be. On Christ
mas itself. The spirit of love and
fellowship.
