At the recent meeting of the
American Heart Association, Dr.
Pfil Dudley White, who was
consulted in
the case of
President Eis
enhower, in
stilled much
optimism into
the minds of
the visiting
specialists. He
justified this
o p timism on
the basis of sta
tistics thathave
been accumu
lated during recent years. Natur
ally, no doctor can prophesy
what will happen to a particular
man who just has had a heart at
tack, but as Dr. White said, "The
majority of my patients have had
but one attack, and have lived
for years after it, with or without
any limitations of activity, and
often with no shortening of life."
Dr. White went on to say, if
the artery that plugged up in the
heart was a small one, and if the
area in which the heart muscle
died, because for some minutes
it failed to receive enough blood
is small, the patient will not be
handicapped. He will be able to
walk along the street as fast as
he ever did, without getting pain
or shortness of breath. All he has
is a small scar. As I often say,
he is like a man with a wooden
leg: To be sure, he is somewhat
handicapped, but he will live as
long as he would have lived if
he had not lost his leg, and he
will be just as useful in his office
as he ever was.
In those cases in which the
amount of heart muscle damaged
is large, the man may remain
short of breath on stairs, or he
may suffer pain in his chest
when he tries to walk fast, or
particularly if he walks fast
after breakfast, or if he walks
into a cold wind. He may get
severe anginal pain, also, if he
loses his temper and "blows his
top." In the case of such a man,
naturally, activities will have to
be restricted.
Desk Comfort Likely
It seems certain now that Pres
ident Eisenhower will continue
to be just as able and efficient
a man as he ever was before.
Perhaps he will not play 27 holes
of golf in one afternoon, but at
his desk he is likely to be per
fectly comfortable and perfectly
safe. Still, I would fear for him
if next year he were to go out
to campaign, and to make sev
eral speeches every day or week.
A campaign for re-election to
the presidency must put a ter
rible strain even on a young and
healthy man.
Dr. White pointed out that
many men who have had a
coronary attack are even more
steady and efficient in business,
and more devoted to their duties
than they were before their spell.
They take better care of their
health than they ever did before.
The future of a man who has had
a heart attack can be influenced
by the height of his blood pres
sure. A high blood pressure must
put extra strain on the heart be
cause the muscle has to work
against a greater resistance.
Should Work
Dr. White went on to say that
if a man can work, he should do
so; it will keep him happier and
healthier. Idleness breeds unhap
piness, and this is bad for the
health of any man. It is bad for
a man who has been active all
his life suddenly to sit down in a
chair and do nothing. Usually it
is pretty tough, also, on the wife
to have an unhappy, irritable,
disgruntled and frustrated man
on her hands all day and every 1
day. Usually, under the impact
of this, her health deteriorates,
also. Often, in such cases, there
is nothing so curative for the
man as some work.
What distresses me is that
often today, when an employer
has been kind enough to give
work to a handicapped man, and
another heart attack has come,
a workmen's compensation board
or a jury gives the man or his
wife a whacking big judgment.
In these cases, the .tsoara or uie
jurors may feel that they have
been kind and good; but aciuauy,
as I must constantly keep point
ing out, every time they soak an
omnlnvpr who has been kind,
make it impossible for thousands
of handicapped men to gex a juo.
No business man can afford to
take the risk of employing him.
If we in America want to use, as
we should, the skilled labor of
thousands of men who are siignt
ly handicapped, and if we do not
A thousand little mice
were recently given a
thousand little bottles of a
carbonated beverage to
see if it had any ill effects
on them.
The only conclusion the
scientists have reached so
far is that 999 mice out of
a thousand practically
never excuse themselves
after burping.

To the many diabetics using

very hard to thrust the needle

they use a mechanism, obtain

when a trigger is released, the

that there is practically no pain

every day with insulin I think I
would get one of these trigger
mechanisms.
