WINTER ARRIVES Clear an hour before, snow blankets
sidewalk in Truckee, Calif., bringing to an end a long spell
of unseasonable warm weather in the Sierras. The snow
fall was the heaviest experienced for this time of year' for

Missionaries are Guests
' Jacksonville Dr. John R.
Turnbull and wife, recently re
turned to the states from Leb
anon, in the Far East near
Israel and Jordon, where they
were engaged in Missionary
work and child evangalism, were
Sunday guests of the Rev. and
Mrs. W. D. Turnbull of the As
sembly of God Church here. Dr.
Turnbull spoke at the Sunday
morning service and in the eve
ning showed pictures of many
of their travels among which was
a tour of Turkey, with views of
old ruins and some of the first
Christian churches known to
exist. Dr. Turnbull is Mr.
Turnbull's uncle.
Miss Virginia Griffin, daugh
ter of Mack Griffin, who has
been visiting here for the last
two igionths, left for home in
Houston, Tex., this week. The
visit was a reunion for father
and daughter as they had not
seen each other for four years.
Miss Griffin while here was
able to make a trip to Crater
Lake and the Oregon caves.

Clyde Smith, Route 1, after
recently spending three weeks
in the Veteran's hospital in Port
land, has now returned here for
an indefinite period of treat
ment. Mrs. Clyde Smith was pleas
antly surprised with a birthday
party last week by all her neigh
bors and children. Forty-four
guests were present.
Fire Chief Lewis Applebaker
reports that the Firemen's an
nual ball Nov. 11 was a huge
success. He thanked the com
munity for support in this event.
The proceeds will be used for
needed equipment.
Mothers of Jacksonville band
members, known as "The Band
Boosters club,"' served refresh
ments at the ball and report a
total profit of S30.
Applebaker stated that every
one should be extra cautious in
regard to fire in this snowy and
freezing weather as it is difficult -
for the firemen to get their
equipment to some' locations due
to impassable roads.

Trail Cooking Club
The Sewing and Cooking Cir
cle met for their second meeting
Sunday, Oct. 30, at the home of
Mrs. Lewis Dusenberry. We
made coat hanger protectors.
Toni Miller and Katheen Meyer
did the demonstrating for our
cooking lesson. Our next meet
ing will be Sunday, Nov. 20, at
the home of Mary Ann Elrod and
Josephine Hume will be co
hostess. Leroy Mauroni, director of
Jacksonville High school band
and the concert originally
planned for Nov. 17, reports the
concert has cancelled due to bad
weather but will be held,
weather permitting, Monday,
Nov. 21.
School was closed at 11:30
a.m. Wednesday due to the un
usual weather but opened again
Thursday morning. Next week
school will only be open on
Monday and Tuesday. Wednes
day is Jackson county teachers
institute at Medford High school
with the Thanksgiving holiday
following.
The Junior Red Cross, recent
ly organized in the Jacksonville
High school, are busy this week
collecting canned goods and
other food to be used for Thanks
giving baskets to be given to
needy families in the commun
ity. Basketball season is well
underway in Jacksonville school
with 26 boys turning out for
practice and others trying out
for the junior varsity team.
The first grade room mothers,
Mrs. Bob Cabler, Mrs. Lee Mor
ton and Mrs. Lewis Applebaker,
are giving a. Thanksgiving party
in Mrs. Gilinsky's room on Tues
day. Light refreshments will be
served and games played.
Mrs. Lewis Applebaker has re
turned from visiting her sister,
Mrs. Bill Bostwick, of Sunnyside,
Wash. The Bostwicks have a
new boy born Nov. 2 and named
Gregory Allen.
Mrs. Riley Norris will visit
with her daughter and family,
the Bostwicks, until Thanksgiv
ing, at Sunnyside.
Mrs. Anna Langley, formerly
of Jacksonville, who has been re
siding in Murphy, Ore., is now
staying in Medford with her
friend Mrs. Anna Cater at 2533
Hillcrest rd. and . can be con
tacted by her friends there.

commentator on drama said,

statement. Let him speak for
himself. Many people were not
surprised at the brilliant per
formance of Miss Winters. Why
should they be, considering the
remarkable performances she
has given in films? An. actress

to the films always has two
strikes on .her when making her
first Broadway stage appear
ance. Being prejudiced against
Holly woodians is characteristic
of some of the half-baked, alleg
edly intellectual Broadway
dramatic commentators. Film ac
tresses have been "surprising"
this type of fellow for years. That
goes as far back as Dorothy Dal
ton, who scored a sensational
"surprise" by her remarkable
performance in the stage play
"Aphrodite" at the old Century
Theater over 30 years ago.

Thornton Says He Will
Not Seek Re-election
Portland '(U.P.) Attorney
General Robert Y. Thornton said
Friday he might not be a candi
date for reelection, thus setting
up the possibility of a wide-open
race for the post next year.
Thornton said he hadn't made
up his mind about running again.
"I have enjoyed the job these
last three years. . . However, I
have not decided whether I will
be a candidate for reelection."

Parish Mission
Starts Nov. 2?
At Sacred Heart

Saturday that a parish mission
would .be held at the church
from Sunday, Nov. 27 to Sun
day, Dec. 4.
The mission will be opened
formaly at the 9:30 a.m. mass
on Sunday, Nov. 27, and a spe
cial introductory sermon will be
gven at all masses that day.
During the rjeriod of the Mis
sion, evening services will be
conducted at 7:30 p.m., the fea
ture of which will be a series of
sermons on the fundamental
facts of Christianity and the
spiritual life. These services will
also include the Way of the
Cross, traditional Catholic hymns
and Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament.

6:30 and 8 a.m. masses.

A discussion of local prob
lems of taxation will be a fea
ture of the weekly roundtable
meeting of the Jackson County
Chamber of Commerce at noon
tomorrow. The meeting will be
in the Jackson hotel.
Paul Hornbeck. chairman of
the roundtable committee, said
County Assessor Robert G.
Fowler would attend, and that
invitations are being extended
to other county officials, and to
officers of Medford and other
cities of the area.

phasized. City Gets Oil Boom;
Water Still Missing
Fredonia, Ky. (U.P.) This
small town in western Kentucky
badly needs a city waterworks,
so the Fredonia Civic club got
busy. i
The club quickly collected
$200 and hired Al .Taylor of
Princeton, Ky., to drill a well.
At 120 feet, Taylor found a
small vein of water, but not
enough to supply the town, so
he kept on drilling. At 225 feet,
he pulled out the bit and
found it covered with oiL
Another 10 feet down, and
the drill still came up slick with
oil. Two Illinois oilmen who hap
pened to be driving by stopped
and after looking over the situ
ation, agreed that Fredonia had
an oil well.
Experts say the pool is prob
ably a shallow one, but a small
scale oil boom has started in the
vicinity anyway.
The only trouble "is Fre
donia still hasn't a waterworks.
